My Son's A Queer, (But What Can You Do?) returns to the West End

My Son's A Queer

Returning to the West End for a second transfer, My Son's A Queer, (But What Can You Do?) is playing a limited run at the Ambassador's Theatre from 25 January 2023.

A joyous autobiographical re-telling of their childhood, Rob Madge recently won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off West End Production in 2022.

Celebrating the joy and chaos of raising a queer child, My Son's a Queer, (But What Can You Do?) is written and performed by Rob Madge (currently playing Pat the Cow in Jack and Beanstalk at the London Palladium).

Directed by Luke Sheppard (&Juliet), Rob shares their childhood memories of creating unsuccessful Disney parades in their living room. Using a mixture of song, storytelling and some old VHS tapes, this production is the ultimate love-letter to anyone who ever tried to put on a show in their childhood living room. As Rob Madge sets out to recreate that infamous parade, will everyone go right this time?

Talking about the announcement, Rob Madge said, "I am so very excited to be bringing My Son's a Queer back to the West End, this time at The Ambassadors Theatre. Putting on a show about when I used to put on shows in my living room continues to be the most surreal, magical thing and I can't wait to share my brilliant, hilarious family and our story (which I hope is a relatable one) with more audiences. I hope that people leave My Son's a Queer feeling brighter and uplifted with the knowledge that anything is possible when the stage is your living room!"

Initially running at the Turbine Theatre, My Son's A Queer, (But What Can You Do?) has enjoyed sell-out runs at both the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and a two-week run at the Garrick Theatre in November this year.

With songs by Pippa Cleary (The Great British Bake Off: The Musical), the show features original music including the tunes, We Will Be Loved Anyway, Yellow Dress and Anything Is Possible.

Produced by Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor-Mills, other creatives involved in this one-performer show include set and costume design by Ryan Dawson Laight, video design by George Reeve, lighting design by Jai Morjaria, sound design by Tingying Dong, and orchestration by Simon Nathan
