My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) in London

My Son’s A Queer, (But What Can You Do?) written by and performed by Rob Madge (Oliver!, Les Misérables) and directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet, In The Heights) celebrates the joy and chaos of raising a queer child, and originally had a critically acclaimed, and sold out run at the Turbine Theatre in 2021. Following another sell out run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, My Son’s A Queer, (But What Can You Do?) will transfer to the Garrick Theatre, in London’s West End, from 21 October to 06 November 2022.

When Rob was 12, they attempted to stage a full-blown Disney parade in their house for their Grandma. As Rob donned a wig and played Mary Poppins, Ariel, Mickey Mouse and Belle, their Dad doubled as Stage Manager, Sound Technician and Goofy. Unfortunately, Dad missed all his cues and pushed all the floats in the wrong direction. Mum mistook Aladdin for Ursula. The costumes went awry. Ariel's bubble gun didn't even work properly. Grandma had a nice time though.

Winner of the ‘WhatsOnStage Best Off-West End Production 2022’ Award, My Son’s A Queer, (But What Can You Do?) is the joyous autobiographical story of social-media sensation Rob Madge as they set out to recreate that parade - and this time, nobody, no, nobody is gonna rain on it!

Paul Taylor-Mills, Artistic Director of The Turbine Theatre said “Exactly three years ago I took a group of my colleagues and friends on a boat along The Thames to a relatively unknown theatre space hiding beneath one of the most iconic buildings in Europe, The Battersea Power Station.

Best show in London!

I've seen it 4 times and I am an 80 year old Grandma! I love Rob, and I apologize for bad teachers.

Moved to tears

I went with my queer teenager (14) on a city trip to London. We are from the Netherlands and wanted to see the musical Heathers. Since we enjoyed that immensely we decided to see another show and stumbled across this one. My child enjoyed the show (and the audience!) and felt so in place there. But being Dutch, some of the jokes were a bit lost on them. For me though, a mother of a (sometimes) struggling queer child, this show moved me to tears. It was so relatable and recognisable. I will remember this for a very long time to come.

Pleasantly surprised

We sat front row circle which was perfect but could have bought a slightly cheaper ticket which would have just as good a view. Beautiful theatre and although the show was quite short it would have lost it’s impetus if it were any longer. Robert Madge was gloriously entertaining in every aspect. The addition of the home movies really helped to create the story. A great way to spend an afternoon

F***ing Fabulous!

Best show I’ve seen in a long time. Deserved a much longer run — as in permanent run! Everyone NEEDS to see this show.

Just fantastic and heart tugging!

Fantastic show with great story line. A must see show that will have you laughing and feeling a bit tearful too. Really brilliant!

Queerly

One man show about growing up an only child who felt different from his class. A back ground of hilarious videos from his childhood. Very funny and tender about bullying and coming of age. Obviously came from a loving family who always stood by him. Only lasted an hour but was fast moving and entertaining. The actor was tremendous
