That Bastard, Puccini! in London
That Bastard, Puccini! is inspired by one of the most famous plagiarism scandals of the 20th century: who was the true genius behind the beloved and iconic opera, La boheme? Leoncavallo claims Puccini stole his idea, resulting in an explosive battle of genius between the two brilliant composers in this hilariously chaotic play about obsession and reputation.
That Bastard, Puccini! is written by James Inverne (A Walk With Mr Heifetz) and directed by opera and theatre director Daniel Slater (Orfeo ed Euridice/Dido & Aeneas, Making Waves). In an interview, Inverne says, ‘I have long been fascinated by great artists and their artistic processes - what made them great, and how did they get there?’Don’t miss this scathingly witty drama, which will have its world premiere at Park Theatre on July 10th.

It’s 1893 and Ruggero Leoncavallo and Giacomo Puccini are battling to become the first to complete a score for an opera of La Boheme. As mutual accusations of idea theft and plagiarism fill the air, a scandal of epic proportions is brewing in elite Italian society. Based on real life events, THAT BASTARD, PUCCINI! is penned by James Inverne and directed for Park Theatre by Daniel Slater.
