The Entertainer – Old school music hall as a metaphor for 1940s Britain
Some stories resonate down the decades. This is one of them. It's one of five star-studded chunks of stage excellence from the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company, a year-long event spanning autumn 2015 to late 2016.
The play goes on stage at the Garrick theatre between 20th August and 12th November 2016, a contemporary classic starring the seedy, failing music hall star Archie Rice, a tormented and miserable man.
This is explosive stuff. It's also hugely entertaining and compelling, a fascinating insight into the tacky glamour of the genre. An exploration of the very nature of private emotional pain, it delves into the masks people wear in public to keep themselves safe. Which is just one reason it's such a popular play: people are people, whatever time they live in.
John Osborne's three act play was first produced in 1957, but the playwright was already well known for the infamous social study Look Back in Anger, about the life of an 'angry young man', a recurring theme of the times. Laurence Olivier loved it, eventually persuading Osborne to write a play about an angry middle-aged man.
The Entertainer – The story
Archie Rice is a failing music hall performer at the end of his career. His family is in crisis, the genre he loves is dying, he's miserable and angry... and the whole rotten mess just seems to mirror the cultural and political landscape of the time.
As prison beckons, Archie's final story laments the collapse of the music hall scene he loved so much. It also represents a farewell to England from the playwright, who foresaw the dramatic changes post-world War Two Britain would experience.
Branagh's new theatre company is host to a series of plays at the Garrick theatre from autumn 2015 to November 2016. He's joined by Rob Brydon, Judi Dench, Lily James, Richard Madden and a load more acting talent for the season.
Powerful emotions drive this modern drama packed with drama, with its genuinely shocking ending. Not to be missed!

Bit of a damp squib, Kenneth Brannagh was excellent and stood out from the crowd, I could see that the other actors were doing their best but we could not follow the story or ages, speech-style script was wordy and exhausting, some of the language was cringy at times with frequent use of long abandoned racist words that did not lend anything to the story, A substantial portion of the audience in our section (dress circle) left at half time, some before that. I was tempted but hoped for an improvement that would justify the cost of the tickets. There was some improvement but not enough. Too long, too wordy, needs revision, needs shortening.

Enjoyed the performance and Kenneth Branagh's performance was outstanding, although I agree with some of the critics that he didn't portray Archie Rice as disillusioned as Osborne's charcater. Paralell's with post-Brexit Britian were well placed

Interestingly the script seems to be the poor relation of the screenplay. All in all rather a lack lustre production - Branagh simply isn't Olivier and he should stop trying to emulate the great man

Hard to hear Jean sitting in row V, which made much of the plot obscure. A very "down" theme in spite of the tap and the jokes. Gretta and Kenneth excellent.

The play held you and moved you in many directions, (laughter, pity, sadness, irritation!), relative to the individual personalities on display, which were so well acted. I am sure that most of us have met some if not all of the major characters at some time in our life.

the original production, which I saw, was a vehicle for the acting of Olivier, wit all his legend and mystery ayyaching to him. It was an outpouring of the spleen of an eloquent but shallow and over-opinionated playwright. Today's theatre audience is b=not even overwhelmingly British. They cannot today understand what the play is about, People around me left at the interval. The original audience was hurt and pained by the play, as intended. Last night's audience had not the faintest idea what they had stepped into. All the social subtleties evaded them, inevitably. How could it not? they are both the wrong generation and, many of them, the wrong nation! This play was meant for a British audience, not a 21st century tourist audience.

Review: THE ENTERTAINER at Garrick Theatre

Kenneth Branagh ends his season of plays at The Garrick with John Osborne’s 1957 commentary on post-war Britain’s parlous and weakened state, highlighted by the military and diplomatic inadequacies revealed in the government’s handling of the 1956 Suez Crisis, presaging the collapse of the British Empire.
