But the story continues in Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury, dropping us into a courtroom where Angelina is suing her former fiancé Edwin for breach of promise. But a romantically inclined judge may throw a spanner in the works with an unexpected twist.
Trial by Jury & The Zoo come together in this wildly entertaining pairing, acting as the prequel and sequel to the same ill‑fated love story. Both these rarely performed but hilarious works are packed with wit, absurdity, and twists. Directed by ENO favourite and Gilbert & Sullivan specialist John Savournin, who brings his iconic flair and a 1980s vibe, this unlikely combination pairs a rare glimpse of Sullivan's early work with the first success of one of opera's most legendary partnerships. Both librettos come with a healthy dose of the ridiculous spiced with a light sprinkling of social satire, and the result is light, witty, and melodically brilliant. Olivier Award winner Peter Whelan conducts both pieces, and Gilbert & Sullivan veterans Mary Bevan and Robert Murray lead both operas as the turbulent love-birds Angelina and Edwin.
