A Man For All Seasons in London

Starring:

Gary Wilmot, Martin Shaw

It broke records on tour, selling like wildfire. Now Theatre Royal Bath’s acclaimed production of Robert Bolt’s 1960 classic A Man For All Seasons, with Martin Shaw in the starring role, hits the Harold Pinter Theatre running for just 38 performances. Shaw plays one of the most influential and dangerous men in England, bringing his role in history to startling life, and Jonathan Church beautifully directs the drama.

What is A Man For All Seasons about?

Martin Shaw portrays Sir Thomas More, the hugely popular scholar, Catholic, family man, ambassador and Lord Chancellor who was also a friend of the violent, unpredictable King Henry 8th. When the king decides he wants to divorce Catherine of Aragon so he can marry Anne Boleyn, Thomas finds himself having to choose between his loyalty to the royals and his conscience. The act of defiance he ultimately decides upon sees him pay the ultimate price.

Martin Shaw has delighted us for decades with TV roles in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and, of course, the '70s detective show The Professionals. On stage he has wowed audiences with his work in Hobson’s Choice, The Best Man, and Twelve Angry Men. The rest of the cast includes Gary Wilmot, Edward Bennett, Abigail Cruttenden, Nicholas Day, Calum Finlay, Asif Khan, Hari Kang, Sam Parks, Louisa Sexton, Timothy Watson and Orlando James.

Walk this way for tickets to see a play about a man of principles that has been thrilling audiences for more than sixty years.

A man of today

Play was excellent and had parallels today with the honesty of our politicians . They are sadly not of the calibre of Sir Thomas More . There are only a few of whom I would name Angela Rayner as one . However not any of the current Tory shadow cabinet nor ANY of Reform who are seemingly only it for themselves .

Classic!

Martin Shaw was and remains terrific in the role of Sir Thomas More. He is ably supported by the remainder of the cast - particularly the Common Man and Cromwell.

The sound quality was very poor we could not hear 50% of the dialogue. Others sitting close by were making similar comments A real pity I was looking forward to the play given the good reviews it has received.

Don't miss this treat

Thoroughly enjoyed the show and its production. Amazing acting from Sir Thomas More and Oliver Cromwell in particular, a great cast who performed with such energy and passion in their respective roles. I'm amazed how they can deliver their lines, and there are a lot of them, so wonderfully well and with such timing. I salute them and their expertise. Thank you for an enjoyable evening on my birthday.

Great show. Excellent acting

A very watchable show with excellent acting. The sound however needs improvement. It was difficult to catch words spoken , especially by Sir Thomas Moore in Row O in the stalls. Rest all good.

Shaw Tracks Schofield

The right thing to do, Martin. In so doing, your own portrayal gained prowess. Our nation harmed itself when it harmed Sir Thomas More…we’re still reaping what we sowed.

Ageless drama, always relevant

If you like a true tale of personal morality versus state fascism, go see this. The Harold Pinter theatre is perfectly suited to the presentation of a story like this. The whole cast is brilliant throughout, though Shaw, the man of indomitable conscience, is exceptional. His transformation from More the man of state, into More the catholic martyr is extraordinary and totally riveting.

A good historical drama

Martin Shaw was brilliant and was supported very well by other good actors. Cromwell and the King were excellent. The narrator who took various parts such as steward or servant was excellent and very amusing. The lighting was very dark; it might have been difficult to see from a distance but we were in the front stalls so it was OK.
