Gypsy in London
Starring:
Imelda Staunton, Lara Pulver, Peter Davison
Gypsy – Sing your heart out to Sondheim and Styne
Gypsy is a brilliant 1959 musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. It's inspired by the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the infamous striptease artist and burlesque dancer, and focuses on her famously pushy and aggressive 'showbiz mother', also called Rose.
If you've never seen the show, you'll probably recognise some of the show tunes which, as musical theatre hits so often do, have entered the consciousness of millions of us without our realising it: Small World, Baby June and Her Newsboys, Mr. Goldstone, I Love You, You'll Never Get Away From Me, Broadway, All I Need is the Girl and, of course, Everything's Coming up Roses, have delighted audiences for decades. In fact the show's score was famous for helping launch Stephen Sondheim's star-studded career as a writer of numerous smash hit musicals.
Many pundits feel Gypsy is the greatest ever American musical, and Mama Rose's role is often lauded as the 'King Lear' of musical theatre. It has wowed Broadway audiences no less than five times since the 1950s and is more or less always on the stage somewhere in the world.
The last West End production of the show hit the stage back in 1973, so this London revival is something genuinely special. Where will it be playing? The show's hugely popular 2014 run at the Chichester Festival Theatre sold out in no time, so it's no surprise that Gypsy will transfer to the West End's famous Savoy Theatre from early spring 2015.
Gypsy - The story
Rose Hovick is the archetypal pushy show business mother. She raises Louise (who eventually becomes Gypsy Rose Lee) and her sister June on the road as they travel around the USA with their vaudeville act.
Rose has big plans for her daughters. June is the innocent star of her show, and Rose wants to keep it that way. But June is growing up fast and family vaudeville acts like theirs are becoming less popular. When teenager June unexpectedly leaves the show, Rose decides shy Louise must step up to the mark. But Louise doesn't have the same ambitions as June and vaudeville itself has changed, becoming more risky and seedy, focusing on the burlesque side of things...

Looked forward for months to see the final night of Gypsy and it did not disappoint. Imelda Staunton was fantastic as Rose and the standing ovations were well deserved. Loved, loved, loved the show!

Music is maybe a bit old fashioned these days and the show is maybe a little long but the performance from all of the actors is outstanding and Imelda Staunton is breathtaking, if she doesn't win some sort of ward fro her performance there is no justice.

Like all older theatres I think sitting at the front of the stalls or dress circle optimises your enjoyment of the show. The show is exceptional, very enjoyable but reasonably intense.

Although Imelda Staunton was marvellous as Rose, belting out the songs and really fitting the part, we were disappointed that the musical never made the heart sing in terms of the dancing and singing by the rest of the cast. The child performers were entertaining in the first half, and we kept hoping for something more in the second half but it just never happened. For a show about vaudeville and burlesque entertainers their 'acts' featured surprisingly little. It all just seemed underplayed in rather drab sets.

This show had received such good reviews we wondered whether we would be disappointed. In fact, it was better than we were expecting. All the cast were excellent but Imelda Staunton was superb!. At one point towards the end where she had quite a dramatic song, she paused and you could have heard a pin drop in the theatre, such was the power of her performance. Don't miss the opportunity of seeing this show.

First half was slow n wasn't sure if I would return to see second half but I did. Second half was so much better. Wouldn't recommend to younger audience. Acting was good but story very slow. Felt second half of story rushed.

The Savoy theatre is dark and dingy not a lot of space in the bars and corridors you really need to make your way to your seat and stay there.which is difficult for a show that takes just under 3 hours. The dress circle hangs low over the stalls so it can feel cramped. The rows closer to the stage were sold out I was about two thirds back from stage. The show itself more than made up for the inadequacies of the theatre. Imelda Staunton was spectacular!

Absolutely fantastic. Imelda Staunton should win awards for this, she was superb. As was the actress Lara Pulver who plays her daughter in the show. Brilliant. The whole cast was excellent, but these two do deserve special mention. Go see it quick, as it finishes next month. Tickets bit pricey, but there are a lot of musicians in the pit, there's a large cast, and frankly it's well worth . The booking fee extortionate though at £28 per ticket. Ouch.

Imelda Staunton's performance was incredible. I never realised she had such talent. We were in a party of 4 and we all had the same opinion. The show really hummed along, in particular the lighting and sets added hugely to the general enjoyment. One of the best evening's entertainment we have had.

I like these actors but I did not like them in this show which I did not enjoy at all. I found their "American" accents irritating and their singing generally, too loud and screechy. I understand it is to depict the story of Gypsy Rose. I booked the tickets to accompany my sister who, sadly, although she wanted to see it didn't like it very much. However, the audience generally enjoyed this production and the cast received a couple of standing ovations; this is therefore my personal and maybe minority view.

A Broadway show at its best. Great acting, singing and staging. Imelda Stauton is mind blowing playing Rose. She understands the character very well and sings and acts to make her a real, but sad, person. The score is one of the best with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim to match. If you can tickets you have to see this show.

I liked/loved everything. I thought Imelda Staunton was powerful; the rest of the cast were also very good and complemented the force of her performance. I was so pleased I had made the trip to London (with an early start and a late return) and I would happily have sat through the evening performance if my return train ticket would have allowed. The show to see. The orchestra was superb, the music was excellent and the words of some of the songs are moving and thoughtful. Miss seeing this show ... at your peril.

It is one of the great musicals, with an interesting story as well as first class songs, many of which are familiar.Above all the cast can sing ,dance and act, but Imelda Staunton is an absolute knockout and well deserved the standing ovation and cheers received at the end of the performance. A strong ensemble cast uncovering talents previously under the radar served the production superbly well. Without doubt, Imelda Staunton's performance deserved all the plaudits that have come her way, and then some. Rosalind Russell's performance in the film was memorable, but I think it's just been eclipsed.
