Hand to God in London

Hilarity awaits you at the Vaudeville theatre as Hand to God takes to the stage, fresh from a remarkably successful Broadway run. This is an hilarious play, a huge hit Off-Broadway as well as on, and this is its London debut. The play gathered rave reviews from the critics and theatregoing public alike. And no wonder – if you fancy having your funny bone tickled, you'll be on the floor giggling. Absolutely brilliant.

Hand to God – The story

What happens when a sock puppet takes charge? Mayhem, that's what. When young Jason, a devout Christian puppeteer, manipulates the Tyrone sock puppet something unexpected happens. The thing has a mind of its own. And it's a foul-mouthed, wicked mind. Part delighted, part appalled, Jason watches as Tyrone tempts the good kids of Cypress over to the dark side and the bad behaviour begins...

The shocking personality of Jason's rebellious puppet Tyrone is side-splitting in itself. But when it starts urging everyone it comes across to give in to their darkest temptations, which they do with great pleasure, this fast-paced comedy hits new and dizzying heights. Shy Jason's sleepy little town of faithful folks has never seen the like, nor have audiences.

The play comes from the supremely talented Robert Askins, creator of Princess of Waco, Matthew and the Pastor's Wife, Everything is Ruthless and Doll Parts. His new creation, a puppet just as outrageous and scandalous as it is truthful, is a real scene-stealer. Tyrone was manipulated to masterly effect in the Broadway production by Steven Boyer and it's going to be interesting to see who plays the role of Jason in the West End.

The splendid Vaudeville theatre is your venue for this critically acclaimed comedy masterpiece, a Tony-nominated rollercoaster ride of laughs. The message? Real, happy, functional, warm human beings are both sinful and saintly. It's a message audiences are delighted to absorb, and the US production was so popular we're confidently predicting a fast run on tickets.

As the play's Producer Kevin McCollum said: "Having played an extraordinary nine month run on Broadway, London is the natural next step for a new American play that is this exciting. We are thrilled that Hand to God will soon be experienced by audiences all over the world."

The Broadway production's director, Moritz von Stuelpnagel, also directs the West End show and the cast are to be announced. We'll let you know as soon as we find out.

Extraordinarily well performed, hilarious and profound.

An impressive, original and one-of-a-kind performance that will leave you wondering on the astounding talent displayed and smiling on an adult and teenage story everybody can relate to at some level.

Left with tears!

I'll start this review with a warning... Children are not advise to go! This show is remarkably funny! The story is one of a boy and a puppet who has a mind of his own! The boy is lonely since his father Died! You start by thinking it'll be boring church show but my word it isn't! It is much much more and I am certain that the church would definitely not approve of it! The language is very good (harsh at times) but considering the context it fits very well! The set is amazing, so interesting and very well done! The main actor is phenomenal! Playing 2 different roles and making you believe the puppet is real! It is a must see, one of a kind! A new generation of comical performance that works sublimely.

Very creative and talented

Fantastic show! I found the actors so very talented and their movements with the puppets were incredible. They are so so talented! The set was incredible and inventive with the small space that they had, and so was the lighting. A must see for theatre goers, it was something different for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great puppeteering, average story

This show would be nothing without the main actor and his skill with his puppet. The story is very thin and there is a lot of shouting from all of the cast, which is quite exhausting by the end. And most of the humour is obvious and base.

A play that doesn't know what it is...

This is a play that doesn't know if its a comedy, a horror story or a gritty piece about coming to terms with your emotions.

Review: HAND TO GOD at the Vaudeville Theatre

Hand to God Sometimes as a theatre critic you find yourself expressing a minority view. In such cases I think it's important to stick to your guns so although most established critics have damned HAND TO GOD as tedious and puerile, I loved it in New York and I loved it here, laughing throughout.

HAND TO GOD is transferring from Broadway

by Phil Willmott | Tuesday, September 15 2015, 11:26

Steven Boyer as Jason/Tyrone in the Broadway production of Hand to God The Brilliant HAND TO GOD is transferring from Broadway but will it be as good with an all new British cast? I’m really excited that the Broadway hit HAND TO GOD will be transferring across the pond to the Vaudeville Theatre from 5 February 2016.

Ever since I gave it a 4 star review in New York I’ve been raving about it and it’s great news that Londoners will be able to see why.
