Harlequinade in London

Starring:

Kenneth Branagh

Harlequinade – An achingly funny farce

Kenneth Branagh himself stars in this hysterically funny Terrence Rattigan play, a piece that's rarely-seen but always adored. A proper comic gem, it first took to the stage in 1948 at the Phoenix theatre. Branagh's considerable acting talents are supported by those of a host of popular stage and screen celebs, and he both performs in and co-directs this play in artistic association with Rob Ashford.

Join the fun at the gorgeous Garrick theatre from 24th October 2015 to 13th January 2016 and enjoy a brilliant one act masterpiece you'll remember for a long time to come.

Harlequinade– the story

This hugely witty British farce is set in the mid-1900s' world of the actor-manager, a world long gone, packed to the brim with highly entertaining satire and equally rich in pathos.

A husband and wife acting team are thrown into chaos when the past meets the present head-on in a dramatic clash. When his past indiscretions are revealed, it turns out there's more drama behind the scenes than on the stage.

One horrible evening is all it takes to tear actor Arthur's world inside out, and it happens at the worst possible time: a short few seconds before he's about to go on stage in his role as Romeo. And he can hardly believe the irony. Until now he had no idea he had a daughter, but here she is... and it looks like there's an unexpected grandchild in the mix, too.

It's the first of a series intrigues and dalliances whose results are a side-aching blend of chaos, hysteria and hilarity. Arthur is even more horrified when it turn out he's still married to Muriel's mother Flossie, which means his marriage to Edna is farcical too. It's the first in a series of disasters that plague Terence Rattigan's characters in the playwright's affectionate celebration of the often-eccentric world of theatre.

How can Arthur play Romeo when his life is falling apart before his eyes? Come along and find out.

KB Treats Theater Goers!

Hilarious, creative, original, exceptional!

The first bit was a monologue, one actress two parts within a part. Very well done, inspired, brilliant. Slow, but insightful. The second bit was hilarious and exceptional. An older friend who has been to many performances liked the first performance and the other 20 something friend who's not been to any plays loved the second performance. Something for everyone.

Lovely luvvies in deilcious period farce

Harlequinade is - in the words of the post-war period in which is set - an absolute hoot. A farcical, affectionate send up of luvvies on tour with Romeo & Juliet post WW2, with a hysterical plot about chickens coming home to roost during the dress rehearsal in a provincial theatre, all played to the hilt by Kenneth Branagh and his company, led by KB himself and Miranda Raison as married thesps, playing Romeo and Juliet despite being a tad 'mature' for the roles. Rattigan's writing cleverly references The Winter's Tale, to which this is the KB company's companion piece. There's not a weak link in the company and Zoe Wanamaker relishes playing an acerbic veteran Dame of the stage (she also plays the widow in the poignant curtain raiser All on Her Own). A shame this was the last day of the run.

You won't regret it

A privilege to see terrific actors having fun with a great script

Silly

Although I arrived late, the shorter, solo show was on first: and while I wasn't allowed in for fifteen minutes, I could watch a live feed in the bar. The first show, All On Her Own, has Zoe Wanamaker drunkenly conversing with her dead husband. And she makes a good drunk - despite her dialogue not always being clear. The second show - Harlequinade - is presaged by a short, postwar-style film, explaining how the featured theatre group is one of many being sent around the country, bringing culture to those typically deprived of it. The play itself, unfortunately, was far too silly for my taste. Of course, comedy is subjective, and the people either side of me loved it. But on the basis of this, I'm never again going to see a Kenneth Branagh-directed comedy.

Kenneth Branagh is wonderfully funny.

The show is absolutely brilliant ! Very British humour, my 79 year old mother enjoyed it enormously. Kenneth Branagh is wonderfully funny, the cast is superb and we laughed out loud all afternoon.

Brilliant

Two very different plays - started with a terrific one-woman performance by Zoe Wanamaker, the second was hilarious and brilliantly performed.

Must see

Overall the show was fantastic. The monologue proceeding was should be given just as much credit as the show itself. Zoe Wanamaker was incredible. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. British theatre at it's best. Well done to all

Amazing

Yesterday was my first Theatre experience in the UK (I'm from Hungary, my partner is from Czech Republic). We both had an amazing night. The actors and the play were amazing! We will definitely visit the Garric Theatre again in the future. The staff were also very welcoming and helpful with us! Brilliant service

Terrence Rattigan Lives Again

Two strong, contrasting plays -All On Her Own and Harliquinade - offer theatergoers an opportunity to view the talent of playwrite Terrence Rattigan. The darker All ON Her Own is a tour d' force for Zoe Wanamaker. Harliquinade is hilarious and delightfully paced. Fine use if music and dance. The Branagh Company has great depth and talent. They are a joy to watch. Shouldn't be missed.

Review: HARLEQUINADE/ALL ON HER OWN at the Garrick Theatre

Harlequinade We are incredibly lucky in London to be in the midst of an era where commercial theatre is being reinvented by daring directors and producers. Unlike New York where only sure-fire, star studded hits ever make it to Broadway, the likes of Michael Grandage and Kenneth Branagh are providing the opportunity for audiences to experience an exciting range of both new and old works in the commercial West End.
