The Underbelly Festival on the Southbank grows bigger and better each year, and this summer the extensive programme includes the award winning production of 'Briefs' returning this year with their brand new show 'Close Encounters'.

Review: ANNIE at the Piccadilly Theatre

It's always tricky as a critic when the negativity you feel about a production isn't shared by the audience around you. So although I found the current revival of Annie at the Piccadilly Theatre weak for a number of reasons, people all around me were loving it and gave the evening a standing ovation; so I'm allocating it four stars inspired by their reaction and not the three which reflect my grumbles.

Kevin Elyot was a prominent playwright and screenwriter. He is best remembered as the creator of the comedy My Night with Reg. Winner of the Olivier award for Best New Comedy when it was first produced in 1994, the play was recently revived in a production which started life at the Donmar Warehouse before receiving a West End transfer and subsequently winning the Olivier award for Best Revival.

After a popular and critically acclaimed time running Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Dominic Dromgoole has moved on to a new project aiming to demonstrate the power of the proscenium arch. What this describes is the traditional theatre set-up where by the audience sit in front of a stage and the action is framed by an architectural arch known as the proscenium, from an Ancient Greek term which roughly translates as “in front of the scenery”.

Review: YANK! at the Charing Cross Theatre

It's great that London audiences, including me, are finally getting a chance to see Yank! the American musical by composer Joseph Zellnik with book and lyrics by his brother David. New Yorkers have been raving about it to me for years.
The revival currently playing at the Charring Cross Theatre, fast becoming the venue for quality and innovative musical theatre under the Artistic Direction of Thom Southerland, started life at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester. The critics loved it and enterprising producer Katie Lipson has lead efforts to bring it to London.
