Galentine’s Day falls on 13 February, the day before Valentine’s Day (if you need inspiration for that, we’ve got you covered here!). Made popular by an episode of the TV show Parks and Recreation in 2010, this holiday was designed to celebrate female friendship.

There are some fantastic theatre shows in London that do just this. From the female-empowered SIX, where the Queens reclaim their thrones, to Wicked, which focuses on one of the most notable friendships in musical theatre, there are some great shows to take your best friends to over the next year — not just for Galentine’s Day!
Wicked

Delighting audiences in the West End since 2006, Wicked charts the unlikely but fundamentally powerful friendship between the two Witches of Oz. Adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, this musical plays as a fantastic prequel to the timeless classic, The Wizard of Oz. Paired with breathtaking songs, Wicked delves into the power of loyalty and embracing who you truly are.

With the second installment of the blockbuster film set to be released this Spring, this musical adaptation is a must for a night at the theatre with your friends. The Devil Wears Prada not only features jaw-dropping costume design, but we follow Miranda, Andy and Emily navigate the complexities of female friendships set in the glamorous high-stakes world of fashion.
Mamma Mia

If your best friend is getting married this year, why not treat her with a visit to see Mamma Mia! Set to some of ABBA’s greatest hits, including “Dancing Queen” and “Waterloo”, the musical follows a young bride-to-be who, in the hope of discovering the identity of her father, invites three possible men from her mother’s past to her wedding. Set on a picturesque Greek island, Mamma Mia! has been delighting audiences for over 25 years, making it one of the biggest and best musicals to see in London.
Moulin Rouge The Musical

Whilst this production seems more catered to couples, Moulin Rouge! The Musical has all of the grandeur, dazzling costumes, and high-energy musical numbers which still makes it suited for an unforgettable night out with your friends. Inspired by the popular 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, it follows Christian, a young composer, who falls in love with Satine, the star courtesan of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris. However, their relationship is forbidden, and ultimately leads to tragedy.

If you’re looking for laugh-out-loud comedy in the West End, Titanique is just the ticket. The production, which won an Olivier Award last year, turns one of the greatest love stories into a faultless musical parody. Join Céline Dion aboard the ship of dreams and, with her chart-topping hits like “I’m Alive” and “My Heart Will Go On,” discover what really happened to Jack and Rose on that fateful night.
SIX

SIX is a homegrown hit musical sensation, giving Henry VIII’s six wives the chance to ditch the past and reclaim their own stories. Brought to life in an electric 80-minute show, the musical is performed in a pop group–style that’s distinctively different from anything else in the West End. SIX has it all for you and your best friends: it celebrates sisterhood, and the cast and band are entirely female too!
If you’re looking for some more theatrical delights to enjoy with your friends, definitely check out Kinky Boots, Marie and Rosetta, and Romeo and Juliet, which will also be heading to the London stage this year.
