Stephen Ward in London

Stephen Ward – Catalyst of the Profumo Affair

The music is written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which says a lot… you know you’re in for a treat. The book is by Christopher Hampton and the lyrics by Don Black, both multi-award winners. And it’s directed by Richard Eyre, another big tick in the quality box. It’s Stephen Ward and it’s a new musical making its world premiere in the glittering West End from December 2013.

Stephen Ward - The story

The show follows the stellar rise and equally dramatic fall of the society osteopath, Stephen Ward. His charm and skills have made him the friend of film stars. He knows spies, models, government ministers and aristocrats. And he’s captivated by the increasingly permissive lifestyle of the city’s trendsetters as the country eases into early 1960s post-war prosperity.

Ward’s involvement with the young and beautiful Christine Keeler sits at the heart of the musical. If they had never met, things might be very, very different today – a sobering thought. But they did meet, and the event led to one of the biggest political scandals of the 1900s.

The talent behind the show

If you haven’t heard of Andrew Lloyd Webber, you must have been on Mars for the past forty years! He is probably the world’s best known and loved musical legend whose extensive portfolio includes gems like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind and Love Never Dies… and that’s just to name a few.

Don Black is no stranger to the theatre and film industries. He has worked with Sir Lloyd Webber before on several musicals. He collaborated on productions of Billy, Bar Mitzvah Boy, Bombay Dreams, Dracula the Musical and Bonnie and Clyde. He’s been involved in numerous hit movies including Born Free, The Italian Job and five James Bond movies. He has won a load of awards, appears in the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and was awarded an OBE in 1999.

Christopher Hampton writes for the stage, TV and the silver screen. He has also won numerous awards for his work in film and theatre, given a CBE in 1999. And Richard Eyre, the Director, is equally high profile. He directed at the National Theatre from 1988 – 1997 and has been deeply involved in TV, including the BAFTA winner Tumbledown, ever since. His movie credits include Iris, Stage Beauty and Notes on a Scandal, and he was knighted in 1997.

Really enjoyable. Thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Pity it's closing

It was a very good show, but to be truthful, it would have been better as a drama rather than a musical. The music wasn't brilliant and none of the songs are memorable

Catch it before it closes!

Creatively staged with great use of elaborate back projection (I assume) and minimal set. Great numbers, especially 'You've Never Had It So Good'. Acting and singing first rate. The demanding role of Stephen Ward was played with great charm by Alexander Hanson. Great to see Daniel Flynn again (last saw him in Bracken Moor at The Tricycle) as Profumo and the judge. Charlotte Spencer was a dead ringer for Christine Keeler and brought youth and vitality to the role. It gave me an insight into Stephen Ward's life and tragic death that I wasn't aware off. It shouldn't have happened to him. Catch this show before it closes!!

Entertaining nostalgia.

Brought the early sixties to life, pressed all the right buttons but lacked a really catchy memorable song or two.

Entertaining education

I went to see this show because it was Andrew Lloyd Webber but had a limited knowledge of the subject matter. It was very entertaining, particularly the first half, but with a thought provoking and poignant conclusion. There is a scene in the first half to match the comic timing of 'Master of the house' in Les Mis, as long as you are not a prude. Not a show for children and not one you would revisit time and time again but well worth going to see.

WHOEVER SEES THIS SHOW AND KNOWS A LITTLE OF THE HISTORY WILL CERTAINLY FIND THE SHOW INFORMATIVE AND ENTERTAINING

A musical portrait of a gross miscarriage of justice

The Profumo Affair which brought down the Government and shed light on the corrupt underbelly of the Establishment of the early 1960s still resounds today. Stephen Ward was its victim, a scapegoat set up to take the blame as the guilty parties in high places rallied as they always do to protect their own. This is an excellent musical portrayal of the Affair and its background, offering convincing proof that our "betters" are never to be trusted, and calling for the overturning of Stephen Ward's gross miscarriage of justice. Well done indeed to all involved in this production. I thoroughly recommend it.

Stephen Ward

Really enjoyed Stephen Ward. Alexander Hanson was superb as were all the cast. Alternately tongue in cheek, poignant, thought provoking and saucy. Interesting to look at events from Stephen's point of view and explore his take on the whole Profumo affair. Loved the way projection was used to set the scene and the lighting was very clever. Overall an evening well spent.

great show to bring your partner too especially if he is sick of you taking him to girly musicals. this is great at getting the conversation and debate started afterwards. most of the music is used to drive the story rather than being big show tunes.

Stephen Ward: Lessons from the past

Excellent account of the influence of elites in society and the particular paranoia around the cold war.

Much enjoyed

I have previously seen many West End shows, mainly musicals, and was keen to see something different on my recent visit to London. Stephen Ward seemed to have received good reviews, and so was duly chosen. My seat towards the rear of the stalls provided a good view of the lower part of the stage, but anything happening on the top half of the stage couldn't be seen (although I think that this was only projections of images). Acting was excellent, and the story matter continues to fascinate and appall in equal measure (this is my first experience of what I have termed a campaigning musical!). This isn't a musical filled with memorable songs, like other Lloyd Webber musicals, but was none the less enjoyable for that. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, and would happily recommend the show. Given the subject matter, and some of the language used, I would suggest that it is suitable for adult audiences only.

What's on

Obviously it's all based on fact which made the show far more interesting as it was such an important period and in many ways changed our society completely, I thought it was well acted putting everyone concerned in a fair light, it left me with a different opinion on the subject, so not only entertaining but thought provoking

We were keen to find out more behind this story and were not disappointed. Probably not a first choice for a musical and it struggled in parts. The individual performances were good and we found it very entertaining. We might even go again!

A raunchy/hilarious script mixed with Classic Andrew Lloyd Webber

This musical was a modern and refreshing take on an old story which lets you make your own decision of the truth at the end. The cast was perfect for each role and some very catchy songs. With some provocative scenes and funny quotes this really is a delightful show.

WONDERFUL THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE

Heart breaking, witty, risky, intense. Magnificent artists on the stage giving it all. Great score, half way between Sunset and Evita. What a treat to see actors having so much fun! The staging was stunning in its utter simplicity. A fantastic show. We still humming some of the tunes and laughing remembering some of the scenes and naughty lyrics. Not to miss.

History as I knew and lived through it.

May be helpful if you know broadly the main lines of what happened in 1963 but the story is very well presented and acted very well indeed. My only mild criticism was that the famous Mandy Rice Davies line when told that the Lord had denied sleeping with her and she said "he would say that wouldn't he! did not come over quite as emphatically as it might have. It is a phrase that has echoed down the years. They really got the feel of those exciting rather mad days of the early 1960's when everything seemed to explode and anything was possible. My partner on the night found it "gobsmacking".

Poor

A difficult story to tell through music. Lead male voice was not strong enough. The acting was ok and it would have made a good play but not for musical theatre.

Is It A Musical?

If you are interested in the history around the Profumo case in 1963 this may attract you.If not it will not hold you,and the music is mainly forgettable, with the exception of one song sang by the actress playing Profumo's wife Valerie Hobson.
