The Weir in London
Starring:
Brendan Gleeson
First written by Conor McPherson (Girl From the North Country, The Brightening Air, The Hunger Games) in 1997, The Weir is a poignant, atmospheric play about a group of storytellers in a pub in rural Ireland. Directed by McPherson himself, and starring Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inverness, Harry Potter), it returns to the West End after a critically acclaimed global run almost thirty years ago.
Why should you watch The Weir?
- Don’t miss the chance to see Brendan Gleeson make his much-anticipated West End stage debut. Gleeson is an award-winning Irish actor, who has been nominated for an Academy Award, three BAFTAs, and five Golden Globes. In an interview, he described The Weir as ‘profoundly moving, inspiring, and ultimately hopeful’.
- Conor McPherson is one of the most talked-about playwrights today, known for award-winning shows like Girl from the North Country and The Brightening Air. The New York Times has called him ‘one of the finest writers of his generation’. The Weir is the play that sparked his career as an award-winning playwright, making this a beautifully full-circle moment for him.
- Since opening at the Royal Court in 1997, The Weir has had a blazing run that took it to Broadway two years later, followed by a global tour that took it across the UK, US, Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Australia, and Canada. Writing when it first premiered, Michael Billington called it ‘a spellbinder that transfixes you like the Ancient Mariner’s tale’.
What is The Weir about?
Brendan Gleeson stars as Jack, one of four men who gather in a remote pub in rural Island, where they encounter a woman named Valerie. They begin sharing stories of ghosts, fairies and the supernatural, not realising that Valerie has a shocking story of her own to tell, which will leave them forever changed.
The Weir first premiered at the Royal Court in 1997, where it won the Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Olivier awards for Best New Play, launching Conor McPherson into fame. Now it will open at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin before arriving in London this autumn. The Weir premieres at the Harold Pinter Theatre on September 11th for a strictly limited run - don’t miss your chance to catch this masterful play about the power of human connection through storytelling.

StunningA brilliant production, so funny yet poignant and wonderfully acted. One of the best plays I’ve seen in years. I would highly recommend, especially for anyone with an interest in Irish theatre and storytelling.

Mixed feelings. Not sure what I expected . Rather dismal .I had hoped the stories would have been more eerie. Instead I felt the script was rather dull. If it hadn't been for Brendan Gleeson being in the play I would not of remained in the theatre. I just fixed my attention on Brendan and enjoyed the pleasure of seeing him.

Excellent Adaption of Conor McPherson's WorkThe Weir gives a great look at an Ireland that is growing into a new modern age while still holding onto/ growing out of its older roots and traditions when a typical evening in a local pub gives way to a night of telling eerie ghost stories. Don't let the somewhat haunting description put you off, this play is also very, very funny in places, the script and the actors knowing how and when to break a tense moment. The actors are excellent, with Brendan Gleeson and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as the standouts, everyone feels very authentic to the time and setting. My only minor complaint acting-wise is Kate Philips, who doesn't quite fit as well as the others, but as she is meant to be an outsider to the group, this is likely intentional (I think she is also the only English actor of the group). The set is very well done, it really captures a certain type of Irish pub. Otherwise, the general design is minimal, there's no music nor any particular lighting changes, and the costumes are pretty normal every day wear, but this allows for a focus on the actors and pulling the audience into the stories they tell. An excellently executed drama for those who enjoy the theatre, or who want to see one of Ireland's great actors in an intimate setting.

Perfect experienceI love the play THE WEIR I have read it twice so to see it performed with such effortless presence humour and sting was beautiful. It’s a play of surprising humanity and gentleness a kind of brook running through lives each with their obscure secrets and desires. It’s supreme achievement is that it feels always real yet is a hell if a whimsical and the relief is its VEFY FUNNY.

Absolute gemStumbled across this show while walking in Leicester Square. Connected with the characters easily because they were so real. Some parts were hilarious and the colourful language is spot on (I’m from Ireland so I know). Some parts had me crying and I’m a 55 year old man. My wife had to comfort me!

A fly on the wallThis play was an interesting production - it was like being a fly on the wall listening to the stories presented by the different characters. The pauses built up the tension and helped to create the atmosphere.

The weir reviewI enjoyed the show on the whole, but found the beginning scenes a bit boring, and in a hot theatre on a Saturday afternoon with not much action going on, it was a struggle to keep awake. As a country girl and having grown up in rural Yorkshire, the dialogue at ye beginning took me back to the old pub in my village, and I found myself willing my mind to drift off, just as I used to as a teenager!! The second half the show was very good, with a subtle hint of romance ad hope in the future for two of the characters. It was very enjoyable and the acting was superb. Overall a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon.
