Till The Stars Come Down in London

Till the Stars Come Down, Beth Steel’s acclaimed new play, is transferring from the National to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for its theatreland premiere this summer. The critics adore this deliriously amusing, passionate family drama.

About Till the Stars Come Down

Sylvia and Marek are getting married. It's a gorgeous hot summer's day and everyone's in the mood for a celebration. The family gathers to meet and welcome Marek into the fold. But as the vodka flows, people get drunk and the dancing becomes more frenzied, passions boil over. Will the far limits of love be tested, and if so will love conquer all despite the fact that the wedding has opened up an uncertain future nobody could have expected? This brilliantly funny play reveals how one family struggles to cope in a world that suddenly seems to be changing alarmingly fast.

The show wowed audiences and critics alike at the National Theatre in 2024, staged in-the-round at the National’s Dorfman Theatre to enrich the experience. The production was filmed and is currently available to watch through the National's online streaming service, National Theatre at Home. There will also be on-stage seats on sale at the Haymarket Theatre for an extra-vivid, immersive night out.

Till the Stars Come Down cast and creative team

The play is written by Beth Steel (The House of Shades) and directed by Bijan Sheibani (A Taste of Honey, Barber Shop Chronicles). The set and costume designer is Samal Blak and the lighting designer is Paule Constable. The choreographer and movement director is Aline David, the sound designer is Gareth Fry and the revival director is Elin Schofield. The original casting director, Alistair Coomer CDG, is joined by casting director, Juliet Horsely CDG. The dialect coach is Charmian Hoare, the intimacy director is Asha Jennings-Grant and the fight director is Kev McCurdy. The show is produced by the National Theatre, co-produced with Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Fiery Angel, Short Street Productions and Access Entertainment.

Heading to the West End this summer for a limited run, Beth Steel’s Till the Stars Come Down is a powerful exploration of love, family, and class, set against the backdrop of a wedding in a working-class community, making it both emotionally gripping and socially relevant.

Well Worth Seeing

The show got off to a slow start and it took me about 20 mins to get fully into the story and connect with the characters but from thereon I couldn't fault it. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the ending was very moving.

A true representation of many working class weddings and events for sure.

The show started promptly at 7pm. Lively, funny, heartbreaking and honest. All the ensemble were wonderful and the entire show moved quickly. Pulling at the heartstrings. A wonderful new play with based events haunting present day. A great tuesday night in the theatre.

Difficult to hear the actors individually as they all seemed to be talking over each other, and shouting a lot of the time. Missed quite a lot of the dialogue ande most of the funny lines.

Disappointing

The show is advertised as funny and for families, I think not. There's a lot of foul language and nor a funny story.

Disappointing

Despite a strong and funny first half and some wonderful performances - shoutout to Dorothy Atkinson, who was brilliant - this was ultimately a disappointment. As usual, it was the writing. It felt as if Beth Steel just ran out of energy in the second half, and the play - in which the main theme is family - descended into a welter of yelling and hysteria between the three sisters. Such a shame. And the casting was odd - Maggie seemed more like Hazel's daughter than her sister...

Outstanding show

this ‘sharply comic and deeply touching drama’ follows a tight-knit family gathering on a scorching summer’s day to celebrate the wedding of Sylvia and Marek. But as the drinks flow and the dancing begins, love is tested, loyalties are stretched, and long-held secrets are revealed.
