Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in London

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown – Hilarious!

This fantastic show is rich and vivid, redolent of Almodovar’s Madrid, and Greig's leading role as Pepa promises a wild ride. As she and her dysfunctional friends try to make sense of their love lives, the results are as surprising, funny and heartbreaking as it gets. Expect top class contemporary musical comedy and you won't be disappointed!

Tamsin Grieg is best known for the TV comedies Black Books, Green Wing, Episodes and Friday Night Dinner. She has an Olivier award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing at the Novello, and has a string of top theatre hits under her belt.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - The story

The TV actress Pepa's love life is a disaster. Her boyfriend Ivan leaves her without a decent explanation, which is driving her nuts. So she confronts his wife and son in a desperate attempt to find out what she did wrong and where he's disappeared to. But they don't have a clue.

At the same time one of Pepa's best friends is concerned because of her boyfriend's criminal activities, worried they police will come after her. When the women decide to see a female lawyer, the confusion and chaos deepens as the lawyer turns out to be Ivan's latest squeeze!

The resulting tangle of criss-crossed relationships is side-splitting stuff, perfect for theatre lovers aged twelve and over and a great night out for anyone who loves to be confused, amused and drawn irresistibly into the lives of the on-stage characters. A laugh a minute and beautifully observed.

The Tony Award winning director Barlett Sher oversaw the smash hit original Broadway production four years ago, but this version is different. It has been scaled down a little, the songs and characters have been re-written to bring them bang up to date and the story has been restructured and simplified. The result? Delectable, delicious and delightfully funny.

A delight

I'm a fan of Pedro Almodovar's film and the musical theatre production didn't disappoint. A well paced comedy that picked up all the high notes from the film, great acting, superb vocals, and some catchy numbers which had my toes tapping. The set design was also very cleverly laid out with the transition between scenes also fun to watch, delicious colours and wardrobe choice also created a feast for the eyes. I highly recommend and my straight male friend who came along also found it laugh out loud funny.

A Good Laugh.

The show turned into a bit of a farce at the end but I still enjoyed it. Singing was good with strong songs even though not everyone had a strong voice it made a change from the usual musicals which are often predictable and loud! Musicians were good.Story was good. Scene changing was excellent.

Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown

Slow (disconnected?)start with rolling improvement and pace. Excellent music and songs with imaginative lyrics. Costumes seem linked to an earlier '60's age. Good show that's deserving of improvement. Enjoyed the public appeal from Tamsin Greig at the curtain.

Faultless. Funny. Fantastic.

I cannot recommend this show enough. Go with a good bunch of girlfriends. Pre-order your wine for the interval (great and very reasonably priced) and enjoy the show. Cleverly written, brilliantly acted with passion and fabulous humour.

Funny, fresh take on Almodovar

Strong female leads make for a very brisk story. No need to reference the Almodovar film and the play has a story to follow! Music excellent and well the lighting did give a feeling of Madrid sunshine! Very welcome on a damp March evening!

This show has everything! The musical arrangements/voices/whole cast give a brillient performance...and from a woman's point of view I'm sure we have all 'been there!' It really is a fun show and a must see.

An excellent, very witty show. Music a little raucous for my taste. Not suitable for children

awful and v disappointing

1. couldn't find theatre (surrounded by scaffolding 2. seats that are not fit for purpose and seriously hurt my legs 3. play, main character absent, story v poor, acting amateur etc 4. left at interval, could not stand it anymore 5. no gents toilet... just urinals 6. complained to management, but generally unhelpful and tried to shift blame to ticket agent 7. will not be returning any time soon or recommending the play or theatre to anyone. this was part of a christmas present for my wife, with the added costs of getting to and eating out in london it put a dampener on the whole occasion. if i could get a refund i would!!!

EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS!

Fantastic performances, acting and singing! Very funny story line, great music. I was visiting this with my two friends, we were three different nationalities (other than spanish) but we all enjoyed the show very much. Outstanding performances! I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good laugh and does not feel offended by sexual underlining. ten out of the ten from us!
