Horse of Jenin in London
Living under siege, the people of Jenin in Occupied Palestine have always seen the Horse of Jenin as a symbol of freedom, hope, and resistance. The sculpture, a five-metre horse, was built by local children and a German artist from the debris of houses and cars destroyed by the IDF during the Second Intifada in 2002. Then, on 29th October 2023, an Israeli bulldozer enters the city and tears down the sculpture, seizing it from its people. Palestinian actor and comedian Alaa Shehada looks back on his memories of growing up in Jenin as he explores what might have happened to the horse, in this stirring ode to the power of imagination and the resilience it brings.
Praised by the Guardian as “a funny, haunting coming-of-age tale of boyhood in occupied Palestine”, this witty and moving one-man-show is written and performed by Alaa Shehada. First presented by the Palestine Comedy Club at Edinburgh Fringe, Horse of Jenin blends storytelling, mask, and stand-up in a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that is packed with humour and heart. Shehada asks what became of the Horse of Jenin and rebuilds it onstage from fragments of memory, loss, and hope. This gripping, powerful play is a story of resistance to oppression through storytelling that feels harrowingly relevant to modern global events.
