What is Matilda The Musical about?
In this enduringly popular and wonderfully dark 1988 children’s story, Roald Dahl unfurls the classic tale of Matilda, a gifted child with terrible parents. Matilda’s mother is fascinated by ballroom dancing and ignores her daughter in the pursuit of her obsession. Her father is convinced that the books Matilda loves so much will cause Verrucas to grow on her soul. And the headmistress of Matilda’s horrid school is determined imprison as many children as she can. When Matilda finds she is the lucky owner of a very special ability, will there be a happy ending?
Matilda The Musical – Fantastic entertainment from the Royal Shakespeare Company
The combination of Dahl’s brave little heroine, a script by the Bafta nominated writer Dennis Kelly and hilarious words and music by off-the-wall Australian comedian Tim Minchin make this an absolute treat of a show. Directed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed Ghost and The Lord of the Rings, Matilda The Musical is rich in stage magic.
The production is designed by Rob Howell and choreographed by Peter Darling. Hugh Vanstone created the show’s extraordinarily atmospheric lighting. Christopher Nightingale supervised and orchestrated the music and Simon Bake the sound. Best of all, the stage magic has been created by the same consultant illusionist who put together the effects for Ghost the Musical, Paul Kieve.
Join Matilda on her magical journey as she discovers the power of her imagination and learns to stand up against adversity.

A great interpretation of a magical storyThe show is a great show for the whole family. Outstanding cast and clever script and music. Unavoidably you’ll risk sweet rustling and overbearing parents with ill mannered children in the audience (as we experienced) but unfortunately many people that attend live theatre these days are so used to watching TV shows at home, they seem to have difficulty in telling the difference between live and recorded entertainment. That said, maybe we were just unlucky today. It’s a great feel good show that was thoroughly enjoyable 🙂

Going to the Theatre is always a beautiful experienceThe show was really beautiful, I came with my daughters to have a chance for improving our English, but this time we try difficulties in understanding. Perhaps the actors have a different accent or the children Who spoke in many dialogues were particulary quick.

Thank you! You didn’t disappointWe came to watch Matilda for my daughter’s 6th birthday. She has seen the original movie, and I’ve read her the book it’s one of her absolute favourites. Right from the start, we were surprised with an unexpected and very welcome upgrade. We were seated quickly, and with a 14-year-old brother in tow, we weren’t sure how he’d enjoy it. But searching for the hidden words in the stage display became a fun activity for all of us. The show itself was spectacular. The songs, the acting, and every performance were sensational. My daughter was completely enthralled and couldn’t wait for Miss Trunchbull to appear and she was not disappointed! She left inspired and in awe of Matilda. The storyline flowed beautifully, and the backdrops and transitions were not only seamless but wonderfully entertaining. On the way home, my 14-year-old told us it was one of his best days of 2025 not just because he enjoyed the show, but because he loved seeing his sister so happy. We even bought a “Little Bit Naughty” T-shirt because… sometimes you do have to be a little bit naughty. Thank you for an unforgettable experience.

EntertainingThe show was quite a spectacle with clever stage sets, lightning, special effects and choreography. It was however too drawn out in places and children near by grew restless. The lead at the matinee on 28th Oct was disappointing: her high pitched slightly nasal voice made it difficult to understand her; the S and T enunciations were over amplified and sharp.

Emotional, Energetic, EuphoricWe flew over from Spain for a concert and decided to see Matilda the next day. Got seats in the stalls and the view was very good. The show was excellent and so emotional that it brought tears to my eyes. Fabulous actors, especially the Children, each and every one. The adult cast were very, very good too. Mrs Trunchbull was brilliant - the actor reminded me of a Riff Raff vs. Frank n Furter, so really loved the performance even more. Unfortunately one lady was very rude filming and taking photographs of the show.

It was sometimes difficult to understand the words due to the accent used in the show and the high voice of the actress who played Matilda, so we missed some of the clever sentences and jokes, but understood the general story. Show is recommended

Too loudThe high pitch of the young children singing together created a high pitch screeching noise which was too loud. We could not make out any words being sung. When leaving theatre we were very unsteady walking home. This unsteadyness lasted 2 days. We applied ear drops and the effect was less after 3 days. Very uncomfortable experience and not worth the £200 spent on tickets.

Must see, 5*****First of all let me Say how friendly and welcoming the staff and crew were as well as accommodating. My experience for maltida was under what I expected; people were still coming in to the show 45 mins after than when we started so I couldn’t see much of the production! Then someone behind me kept kicking my chair and talking loudly with there group they was in. I then spoke to one of the stewards who couldn’t stop apologising enough and moved me & my husband for the second half. & oh my the view was amazing and the show was absolutely fantastic. I didn’t get the name of the steward! But he was an absolute star and made my birthday as well as anniversary! If it wasn’t for him I would have left.

Enjoyable family theatreI took my granddaughter aged nine and although we enjoyed the show, we both felt it lacked the magic of Mary Poppins and the thrill of Wicked. It seems mean to criticise the young Matilda but her performance came across as quite bland and unemotional, whereas the supporting children were amazing. I found it difficult to understand her words quite a lot, particularly at the beginning when singing. The mother stood out particularly and we liked the production very much but none of the songs were memorable. A good show but not a great one.
