Billy Elliot in London
Billy Elliot, the touching story of a young boy’s dream come true.
There’s an amazing tale behind this ever-popular stage play. Singer songwriter Elton John saw the first public screening of Billy Elliot at Cannes, and was so moved he immediately contacted director Stephen Daldry about making it into a stage musical. Since then the stage production has won three prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards: best new musical, best actor in a musical and best lighting design, plus an impressive ten Tony Awards.
Billy Elliot the movie, released in 2000, captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and was nominated for three Oscars and thirteen Bafta awards, breaking numerous box office records. This superb stage production is written by Lee Hall, directed by Stephen Daldry and choreographed by Peter Darling, all of whom were involved with the original movie. Expect the same heart-rending plot enhanced by a beautiful musical score with lyrics by Lee Hall and music written by Sir Elton John. himself.
Billy Elliot – The story
Billy Elliot the Musical is the touching story of a boy growing up in working class Manchester during the miner's strike in the grim, gritty mid-1980s. Enrolled in boxing classes, which he doesn’t enjoy, Billy soon finds something he much prefers: a ballet class. It turns out that young Billy has a unique talent for ballet, so much so that it could make him a star. But to achieve his dream he has to overcome financial hardship, win the heart of his no-nonsense home town and be accepted into the prestigious Royal Ballet School. The dance scenes are choreographed beautifully, the songs drive the story along and you’ll find yourself hanging on to the edge of your seat as the drama unfolds… with a happy ending that’ll see you cheering your heart out.
Billy Elliot song list
Elton John’s genuine passion for the Billy Elliot story shines through the stage show’s score with poignant songs like The Stars Look Down, Shine, Grandma's Song, Solidarity and Expressing Yourself. You’ll laugh and cry in equal measure, accompanied by tunes like The Letter, Born to Boogie, Angry Dance and the iconic Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher. Audiences adore Deep Into the Ground, Swan Lake, He Could Be a Star and Electricity. And the finale, including Once We Were Kings and The Letter – Reprise, makes for an unforgettable end to a veritable feast of music and dance.

We love live theatre and have been to quite a few shows. We saw this show when it first came onto the stage, but it has greatly improved over time. More dancing and singing. The cast were very good and gave the young man who played (Billy Elliot) the support needed for the roll. We would recommend that people go and see for themselves. The staff were very helpful and the theatre had lots of atmosphere. An excellent show.

The show was fantastic just love the story third time seeing it and it still grips me all the way through!! The music is great and the singing is superb! I just marvel at those little children who can act/dance/sing like that! I urge you to see it before it closes, as it's something you shouldn't miss out on!

The story and acting were quite good, especially the comedic timing. However, I'd have expected more frequent and more solid ballet dancing throughout a musical having ballet as a central theme. Billy himself was quite impressive, but all other dancing was underwhelming. Voices were tired or else horribly damaged, with some extreme straining and flatting throughout. The vocal issues made me uneasy and took enjoyment out of some of the performance. The music itself was also quite forgettable, unfortunately—I remember not a single tune.

Excellent show, seen 4 times in all, although many families present, need to be aware swearing is a major part of the show, also as set in the 1980's-younger audiences may not be aware of Maggie Thatcher etc.

A great musical ,,, But !! Too much swearing in the whole show through ,, Too much and often F,, word , Bloody- word ,, to listen and watching these swearing rough language with kids audience feel uncomfortable and feel needed to apologise to the children presenting at the musical !! It's understandable that it's a part of the real life in miners time but still Tooo much swearing is not should be acceprable in public show with kids attendance ! Even sorry for kids who take part in the musical is not good to hear these rough language so many times !,, :((

Dramatic and powerful performances, but this paled in compare to the incredible dancing from such a young cast!! Not for very young children though as the language was a bit blue from the miners. I felt that it was justified for the Nth Est miners but not a show I would take my daughter too. Mrs loved it!!

Too much swearing for younger viewers. I took a pair of teenagers who thought that I had gone mad taking them to watch adults and children shouting obscenities at each other. At first they found it funny and then as luck would have it they found it just as distasteful as I did. Shame as the cast was very talented.

The cast were amazing. I wouldn't recommend for anyone under 16 as the language used was quite extreme and I saw a few parents around me looking shocked as they had their young children there. The only downside was the fact we could see from the dress circle the backstage crew chatting behind the moveable scenery which did spoil the atmosphere slightly.

Thought the show had a very slow start with the dialogue difficult to hear and understand (and I'm from the North East!) but the second half was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. The young boy who played Michael was amazing and very amusing. I would recommend visiting the show but not, perhaps, for youngsters as the colourful language is continuous.
