Written as part of the Gensis Almeida New Playwrights, Big Plays Programme, Ava Pickett’s 1536 will transfer to the West End following a successful run earlier this Spring.

Described by the Daily Mail as "Funny, scary, and totally gripping", the critically acclaimed 1536 follows three women who head to their childhood meeting place, thirsty for gossip from London. When word spreads that a clash has occurred between King Henry VIII and his Queen, Anne Boleyn, closer to home, another rumour threatens to catch fire.
Directed by Lyndsey Turner, this is a fiendishly smart and funny new play which asks whether female solidarity can survive in a world where barbarism and misogyny are state-sanctioned.
The production will head to the Ambassadors Theatre for a limited run from 2 May, following Paranormal Activity's run.
On the West End transfer, Ava Pickett said: "It’s hard to put into words how much this whole process has meant to me so I’m going to resort to cliché and say it’s beyond my wildest dreams – which still feels a bit like I’m downplaying it".
The cast for the West End run will be announced soon.
The creative team includes director Lyndsey Turner, Max Jones as set and costume designer, Jack Knowles as lighting designer, Tingying Dong as sound designer, Anna Morrissey as movement and intimacy director, and Will Stuart as composer and arranger. Casting for the show is by Amy Ball.
The show is produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions, Annapurna Theatre and the Almeida Theatre.
1536 will play at the Ambassadors Theatre from 2 May to 1 August 2026.
