Director Nancy Medina's acclaimed production of Choir Boy will play a limited season at the Stratford East Theatre from next month. The play was a keystone in Medina's first season as Artistic Director of Bristol Old Vic in 2023, and it won three Black British Theatre Awards, including Best Production.

Reprising their roles from the previous run will be Terique Jarrett (Fangirls, Lyric Hammersmith) as Pharus, Michael Ahomka-Lindsay (Cabaret, Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre) as David, Daon Broni (Girl on An Altar, Abbey & Kiln Theatre) as Headmaster Marrow, Khalid Daley (Hamilton, Victoria Palace) as JR and Martin Turner (Witness for the Prosecution, County Hall) as Mr Pendleton. Joining them will be Rabi Kondé (Clueless, Trafalgar Theatre) as Bobby and Freddie MacBruce (The Little Foxes, Young Vic) as AJ.
Academy Award-winning writer Tarell Alvin McCraney's Choir Boy is a coming-of-age story that follows Pharus Young, a young, Black, gay student who leads the gospel choir at an elite all-boys prep school in America. When his pride is sullied by one of his peers, Pharus is left wondering what it means to be a young, Black, queer man.
Choir Boy sets audiences on an electrifying journey through the growing pains of humanity as, together, the boys navigate spirituality, sexuality, race, identity, and brotherhood in their journey to becoming men. Intertwined in this production are soul-stirring a cappella gospel hymns and spirituals.
The creative team includes Co-Director Tatenda Shamiso, Set and Costume Designer Max Johns, Arranger & Musical Director Femi Temowo, Composer and Sound Designer Donato Wharton, Lighting Designer Nao Nagai, Movement Director & Intimacy Coordinator Ingrid MacKinnon, Casting Director Julia Horan CDG, Voice and Dialect Coach Aundrea Fudge, Associate Movement Director Ewa Emini, Production Manager Gemma Brooks, Company Stage Manager Vanessa Sutherland, Deputy Stage Manager Theodore Hung and Assistant Stage Manager Emily Mei-Ling Pearce.
Choir Boy will play at the Stratford East Theatre from 26 March to 25 April. It will follow the UK premiere of Here There Are Blueberries, which plays its final performance on 7 March.
