About John Proctor is the Villain
Written by Kimberly Belflower and directed by Tony Award-winner Danya Taymor (The Outsiders), the seven-time Tony Award-nominated John Proctor is the Villain is a revisionist take on Arthur Miller's The Crucible, in which five young women in rural Georgia set out to shed light on the darkest secrets of their small town while studying The Crucible, whose protagonist John Proctor was convicted of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. As their class debates the play's themes of power, gender inequality, and female sexuality, they juggle the ups and downs of forming a feminist club, a father being accused of sexual harassment, and an illicit student/teacher relationship.
It premiered on Broadway in March 2025 before transferring to the Royal Court Theatre on 20th March 2026, where it opened to wide-spread critical acclaim, praised as "a joyous, blazingly intelligent play" (Financial Times). John Proctor is the Villain will transfer to Wyndham's Theatre from Tuesday 2 February until Saturday 24 April 2027. Casting for the West End transfer is to be announced.
Belflower and Taymour said, "We are so grateful that our spells worked and more people will be able to see the play here—and come back again and again—at the incredible Wyndham’s Theatre in 2027."
