An Oak Tree in London
Two decades ago An Oak Tree burst onto the stage for the first time. It has never been forgotten. Now it's in the capital for a West End run starring the man who created the magic in the first place, Tim Crouch, one of our best-loved and most talented theatre geniuses. Not to be missed.
An Oak Tree the story
A dad loses his daughter, killed in a car accident. The driver of the car who ran her down is a stage hypnotist. When the men meet for the first time, while the father volunteers during the hypnotist’s act, a unique live theatre experience unfolds. The resulting story has been described as bold and absurdly comic, a powerful tale of loss, the power of suggestion, and the strange magic of the human mind.
About An Oak Tree
15 guest artists each take to the stage on a different date, performing alongside Tim Crouch, who is back to star in the production for its 20th birthday. Because they're only revealed to audiences on the night, you're in for a surprise. So far we have Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (Gangs of London, Slow Horses), Michelle Terry (Tribes, The Cafe), Luke Thompson (Bridgerton, A Little Life), Russell Tovey (Being Human, American Horror Story: NYC) and Indira Varma (Game of Thrones, Present Laughter) as confirmed guest actors.
An Oak Tree cast and creatives
Author Tim Crouch and his company, Tim Crouch Company, are at the helm, along with Francesca Moody Productions. Crouch is a respected British experimental theatre maker, actor, writer and director whose other plays include My Arm, ENGLAND, and The Author, all of which are highly unusual, inviting audiences to help create the work. In his opinion, "Theatre in its purest form is a conceptual art form. It doesn't need sets, costumes and props, but exists inside an audience's head."
It's no surprise Crouch's work makes up one of the most important bodies of English-language playwriting to have emerged so far in the twenty-first century. An Oak Tree is an exciting addition to the London scene in 2025.

Review: AN OAK TREE at Young Vic
by Stuart King | Wednesday, May 7 2025, 11:36
AN OAK TREE — Tim Crouch has dusted off his 1hr 15min scripted play from 2005 in which the novelty unknown is a different celebrity on stage with him at each performance. With only an hour beforehand to become acquainted with the premise and format, each willing victim in this exercise, submits themselves entirely to Crouch’s direction of their onstage movements and dialogue. It’s an extreme trust exercise and not everyone will reach the end unscathed.
