Sweat in London

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play SWEAT by Lynn Nottage is transferring to the West End's Gielgud Theatre for 50 performances only following a sold-out run at the Donmar Warehouse.

Based on interviews with residents of the rustbelt town of Reading, Pennsylvania, this 'breathtaking new play' (The Guardian) delivers 'a knock-out blow of theatrical force' (Daily Telegraph) as it examines the lives of factory workers facing de-industrialisation. As friendships strain under fear, anger and racial tensions, a devastating outcome awaits the divided community.

Seen it all in the 70s

1970s style Agitprop , done many times before. Probably something Corbyn would enjoy. Dialogue simplistic, clichés, desperate people drinking themselves to death.. One is inclined to shout at them: deal with it, it is called globalisation, get on your bike, or a better education,, capitalism plus endless supply of cheap labour, no point fighting reality.

Don’t waste your time or money

Well, all I can say is that the Pulitzer well must have been really dry when they awarded that. What a facile and uninspired work. It is about the shut down of a plant in the US., in a way, an updated Death of a Salesman (death of a factory), but there was nothing creative about it; the dialogue was banal and predicable, along with being clogged with the ever so creative “fuck” this and “fuck” that. The relationships between the characters were simplistic and cliche. The acting was over the top—perhaps could have been okay with a better play—I felt as though I was being screamed at for a couple of hours—no subtlety, no beauty, no nuance. Too bad.

A Slice of Life

Thought provoking and well presented issue which is very true of today's society.

Terrible and Depressing

Don’t waste your money, if you enjoy uplifting and light hearted shows. Don’t go, horrible and depressing.

There wasn’t one sympathetic character

I thought the writing made everyone look awful, the play was incredibly slow and overall it was just very dull

Review: SWEAT at the Gielgud Theatre

Sweat is the Pulitzer-winning play by Lynn Nottage, transferring to the Gielgud straight from the Donmar. Directed by new Bush artistic director Lynette Linton, whose rise through the London theatre scene has been almost unprecedentedly meteoric.
