Yentl in London
Based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's 1962 short story 'Yentl the Yeshiva Boy', Yentl is the story of a young woman who defies Orthodox tradition by studying Jewish theology with her rabbi father. After her father's death, Yentl defies the laws of segregation by disguising herself as a man and joining a yeshiva where she can continue her education. As her search for knowledge continues and she struggles with her feelings for a fellow student, what unravels is a complex exploration of faith, gender, tradition, and challenging the boundaries set by society.
Following a sold-out, triumphant run at the Sydney Opera House, Kadimah Yiddish Theatre's acclaimed bilingual staging of Singer's revolutionary story is transferring to London's Marylebone Theatre for a limited six-week run. A powerful, urgent, and intimate celebration of Yiddish culture, Yentl is bold, lyrical, and unabashedly modern. Praised as "nothing short of magic" by TimeOut and "a superb theatrical coup" by the Guardian, Yentl is a remarkable story of courage, identity, and living your truth, directed by Gary Abraham and starring Amy Hack as Yentl.
Book now to experience a truly unique and authentically Yiddish story right here in London.

UnexpectedA very different interpretation on the Yentl movie that many of us know. It’s not a musical. Very cleverly narrated and fast moving tale, with some intrigue and twists and turns. With just 4 actors, the play is performed partly in Yiddish with sub-titles projected high up on the stage you do have raise your eyes from the action to follow them. I thought the story was very thoughtfully told although there were a strings left dangling I thought, where it wasn’t quite clear, but perhaps that’s down to your own interpretation.

Why women struggleThis show was good. It shows the struggles of women who wants more than society say. It was serious, deep yet funny. The staff in the Theatre were helpful and polite. We had second row tickets and they were good except when the scene with the bed and the actor stands in the middle of the stage, you cannot see the subtitles.
