The Cripple of Inishmaan in London

Starring:

Daniel Radcliffe

The Michael Grandage season – Introducing The Cripple of Inishmaan

The Cripple of the Inishmaan is one of five amazing plays put on for the long awaited, much vaunted 2012 – 2014 Michael Grandage season, all of which take place at the splendid Noël Coward Theatre.

The season runs from December 2012 to February 2014 and sees some of the stage’ greatest names taking the boards in a variety of star-studded productions, including Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame, the redoubtable Dame Judi Dench, Jude Law, Sheridan Smith, David Walliams, Ben Whishaw and Simon Russell Beale.

The aim of the season is to bring live theatre within the reach of a younger audience by providing lower cost tickets and broader seating availability than usually found in the West End. The final result is a highly creative and long-awaited season designed to assure the future success of the West End and inspire new generations to discover the genre, all directed by respected Director Michael Grandage CBE.

The Cripple of Inishmaan - The story

Martin McDonagh's fantastic comic masterpiece examines the coming of age of an ordinary young man in extraordinary circumstances, created by the author in the twentieth century and a modern classic in the making.

The action is set on the bleak, remote and lonely island of Inishmaan, which sits off the west coast of Ireland. When the locals find out that a Hollywood movie is about to be filmed on the island next door, Inishmore, a young crippled boy Billy becomes obsessed with it, desperate to win himself a role in a brave effort to lighten up his incredibly tedious everyday life.

An unforgettable dark comedy

Theatre fans of every age will adore this fresh adaption of Martin McDonagh's classic dark comedy. It’s uplifting, funny, tragic and thoroughly entertaining, with Daniel Radcliffe in the starring role.

Money well spent

A very well done show. Daniel Radcliffe was magnificent especially his Irish accent. The other actors were unknown to me but the whole cast was just as good as Daniel and certainly showed that they had all put in a lot for the play. The jokes were witty and comedy timing was brilliant. At times it was hard to follow the dialogue but then I'm not a native Irish! The storyline was simple to follow and had enough drama and suspense to keep the audience guessing. The only advise I have is if possible, to get a seat closer to the stage as its a large theatre and some of the expressions/ actions can be missed from a large distance. Overall a very well worth play to watch, especially if comedy and 'feel-goods' are your thing!

Irish irony/writing at its best

Liked the twists in the story - the throwback to Old Irish thinking/culture. Caught the feel of it all.

A wonderfully moving play with a great cast

A fantastic show! The play was full of humour, great accents and excellent acting. I thought that the cast were very well assembled and portrayed their characters with a respectable amount of sophistication. Dark but funny, the play tells the story of a Cripple boy who goes through tremendous hardships in his battle for recognition on a small Irish island. This is an excellent production and I recommend it to anyone interested in the art of theatre.

laughter and tears

Funny and sad all at the same time. My 13 year old found it very sad in parts, not sure it is good for very young children, the story doesn't leave you on a high. That said the acting was wonderful, the characters were real, you became part of their world, hence the laughter and the tears.

Confusing line story

I thought the story was rather confusing and very difficult to follow. I had an impression that all the people came just to look at Daniel and most of them were his fans. Didn't quite get the humour, may be it was a bit too thick for me.

Oirish stew

If I was Irish and I'm actually half Irish from my mother's family I'd be insulted by this play, let's get all the cliches out there and in your face, Terrible stuff, story doesn't make sense, the twists are palpably wrong and ham fisted, the dialogue at least in the first half was truly awful. Yes, funny at times but only if you think you're watching Father Ted and that was funnier and well-written, this wasn't. The acting was better than the play.

It's all in the second act

The first act is short on story and long on crazy Irishman humor At the interval I was confused about where the story was going: it seemed like it could go anywhere. It all came together in the second act where the story picked up a direction and more than a little misdirection. Humor, pathos and strong performances all around.

Outstanding

Listen carefully as the accents are thick. Perfect piece of thought provoking and absorbing theater.
