Arcadia in London
This 1993 play takes place in the elegant estate owned by the Coverly family, across two timelines: in 1809, teenage prodigy Thomasina Coverly and her tutor Septimus Hodge explore issues both intellectual and romantic. In the modern day, a group of academics led by historian Hannah Jarvis investigate a mysterious scandal involving Lord Byron that possibly took place at the estate in 1809. Arcadia explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between classical and romantic temperaments, and the disruptive influence of sex on our lives. It first premiered in London in 1993 and won an Olivier Award for Best Play.
This revival of Tom Stoppard's classic play is directed by Carrie Cracknell (Sea Wall/A Life, The Grapes of Wrath), marking her debut at the Old Vic. Exploring the relationship between order and disorder, the nature of time, and the tension between emotion and reason, Arcadia is a beautifully complex and rich play. Tom Stoppard is one of the most celebrated writers of our time, and the mind behind plays such as Leopoldstadt, The Invention of Love, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Of the play, Cracknell says, "Its wit, beauty and curiosity remind us that the pursuit of knowledge is a deeply human joy.” Witty, bold, and flirtatious, Arcadia will run at the Old Vic from 24 January to 21 March 2026. It last appeared on the West End in 2009, so this is a long-awaited and much-anticipated opportunity for London audiences to catch one of Stoppard's cleverest plays.
Book now and don't miss your chance to catch a Tom Stoppard classic that dives into the complexities of human nature and the pursuit of knowledge.

A master stroke in weaving concepts of Mathematics and time travel together with themes of sensuality and sex. Stoppard shows us why he has few peers... his work is timeless.C Reviewed on 17 March 2026 by Christian

We first saw Arcadia when it was performed at The National under Trevor Nunn, with Rufus Sewell, Felicity Kendall and Bill Nighy. Although the production in the round worked well and the audience loved it (and I can see that this setting provides almost twice the number of seats), I very much missed the gorgeous earlier set with the beautiful room and the sunlit parkland back-drop seen through the huge wrought iron windows. Also the physical doors either side of the stage, banging and slamming, were missed. I did also wonder if the cast was a bit miscast. The actors all seemed to be the same age, which lost the variation of the the youth of the 19th century Thomasina and Septimus compared to the older modern-day Hannah and Bernard. But it was a great evening and we thoroughly enjoyed the production.

Creative staging refreshed this long time favourite play.It worked so well in the round. Bit daunted at first by large numbers of school Parties but they remained engaged and responded enthusiastically to the plot and character developments. There were a lot of people coming in late which meant disruption on five or six occasions spoiling the experience for us.

Science, love, history and humour, all in one playIt's a great play, carried off successfully in the round, although when actors face away, it can mean some lost dialogue.

A wonderful play if seen in the right conditionsFirst things first. It’s a great play. A rare combination of good storytelling, clever, witty language, intellectual fireworks, thoughtful characterisation and emotional heft. The acting was generally excellent, and the lighting and stage effects were striking. But I thought the production in the round, though it was skilfully done and underlined some of the play’s themes of circularity and historical resonance, did not work well in this theatre as it compromised the set and staging and spoiled the viewing lines of some of the audience.

The show was good, actors were great. The seating leg room was much too limited.

Anything by Tom Stoppard is worth seeing......but Arcadia is a particular favourite of ours, we think this is our third time, over very many years. Incidentally, your questionnaire is confusing; I assume that the five "buttons" for each "question" are rated highest (i.e. best) to lowest (worst) from top to bottom, but they could equally well have been numbered 1 (worst) to 5 (best). A redesign is needed!

Pretentious and unconvincingThe theatre was uncomfortably cold. The play was pretentiously intellectual and was unconvincingly acted. We left at the interval and would have done so earlier but for not wishing to disturb other members of the audience. Very disappointing as this was my wife’s Christmas present.
