McQueen in London

Starring:

Stephen Wight, Carly Bawden, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Laura Rees, Michael Bertenshaw

McQueen – The story

The real story of Alexander McQueen goes like this. The youngest of six children, after school McQueen took an apprenticeship at the Savile Row tailors Anderson and Shephard then moved to Gieves and Hawkes. It was an auspicious start. In 1992 his MA collection was famously bought lock, stock and barrel by Isabella Blow.

The great man's shows were famed for their emotional power and raw energy, both eerily romantic and firmly contemporary. His work combined the finest in bespoke British tailoring with the workmanship of French Haute Couture and the perfect finish of Italian manufacturing. In just a decade he became one of the most respected fashion designers in the world, a multi-award winning creative spirit.

So what's the story behind this uniquely imaginative and quirky play? You're going to love this...

McQueen's Mayfair garden is home to much more than a bunch of plants. High in a tree, a mysterious girl is hiding, and she's been there for eleven nights, fascinated by his struggle for inspiration as he delves deep to create his next collection.

Now it's time to act. She climbs down, breaks in, steals a fabulous dress she'd never be able to afford in real life and the pair hit the streets of London for one of McQueen's famously outrageous nights out. But it turns out the girl needs more than a beautiful designer dress to survive a night like this. Will the two troubled souls live another day, giving each other the comfort they both crave?

Stephen Wight stars as the designer in a production that has already attracted phenomenal audience and critical acclaim. It transfers to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in August 2015 and it's on stage for a strictly limited run.

This play will take you on a journey that's as hypnotically beautiful as it is dark, entering the strange world of the British fashion industry's darling, their greatest contemporary artist.

As The Times says, “Christopher Marney’s choreography is sensual and menacing. David Farley’s design elegant and evocative. A fabulous performance from Stephen Wight”. The Evening Standard joins in, saying “Stephen Wight captures the tormented genius of Alexander McQueen”. All of which indicates there's a passionate, unusual treat in store for anyone who was charmed by McQueen's incredible creations.

OWFUL

BORING!!!!! THE WORST THEATRE PLAY I EVER SEEN!!

Reviewed on 15 October 2015 by , London, United Kingdom

Surprised!

I read some bad reviews after I booked the tickets so was not looking forward to the evening, but was pleasantly surprised. Interesting way to portray the story, great staging and some humorous highlights. Shame the theatre was not fuller, but does underline the fact you should not always be swayed by the critics!

Magnificnet, amazing, enthralling, insightful

Having seen "Savage Beauty" twice and read "Blood Beneath the Skin" by Andrew Wilson the play further enhanced my understanding of Alexander McQueen - both his personal and professional lives. Not sure if anyone who went to see the play "cold" could fully understand the storyline. The production was amazing - a delight to watch. It was also very moving. The acting, stage design and music made a perfect performance. My friend and I loved the play and so enjoyed the evening. Just wished we could have bought a recording of the music. I could easily see it again however doubt if I can in the next week. Congratulations to everyone involved.

See it for yourself .... don't go by the critics.

Didn't expect to enjoy McQueen so much because of some reviews I'd read. Was genuinely surprised at how moving it was. Also the costumes and choreography were fantastic - mesmerising. The two main actors were fantastic - really believable in a surreal scenario. I came away feeling that I really knew Alexander McQueen. See it and make up your own mind.

Extravaganza of colour and movement with a sensitive portrayal of a genius trying to keep things together

It is a must see

I simply fell in love with the text of the play itself. I have to buy the text published and I wish to read it. Again and again and again. It brings so much, it tells a lot. I am in love with that play. In love with the performance itself. It was a great show, a great, dynamic show. Moving, passionate, touching. It made me cry several times… That means a lot… First - McQueen - played masterly. Applause! Isabella Blow… I have no words to describe how much I admire the actress playing her. Applause! That woman, that actress is a… I have no words. I am just speechless. The whole cast - admirable! The dancers - magical! Applause! Unforgettable! Applause… Alexander Angelov

McQueen in wings

Truly enjoyed this show, we were hesitant when we saw the reviews, but how wrong they were. Excellent show, a story to be taught, actors were superb and what a wonderful theatre. Not recommended for families or young children because of the swearing, otherwise anyone else.......its the story and they got it right.

Depressing

I would not see this a second time and I would not recommend it. I found it depressing and rather pointless. Not the actors fault though. The storyline of the girl (from the tree) was naff and silly. The mannequins were the best part of the performance. Our seats were upgraded to A 15 and 16 and we had a brilliant view.

Thought provoking story

Really enjoyed the show. Gave an interesting insight into mental illness and the life of 'celebrity'.

Excellent play!

Really so pleased I got to see McQueen. Stephen Wight was exceptional and uncannily so like Lee McQueen in his look and mannerisms. This production has everything; sadness, humour, warmth, vulnerability, bravery, poignancy, the list is endless. Particulary loved the writing of the scene where Lee describes the blode woman, and thought the dialogue with Isabella blow was brave, raw and very moving. Think I'll be going to see this again!

Amazing

Having seen the savage beauty show at the v and a this was a great follow on. We felt that the story de picked the pain and struggle of being a tortured genius and i could genuinely relate to the challenge of living one day at a time. Depression is something that film makers and producers she away from and I felt it was very brave. As someone with depression I for once felt that the illness was talked about in an accurate way and not glamourised or belittled. Amazing acting too

McQueen - Theatre Royal Haymarket James Phillip's play McQueen takes us into the mind of celebrated fashion designer, Alexander McQueen and explores the struggle he faced balancing a celebrity life style with the pressure to produce constant, ground-breaking designs on demand. The story is slow to get going and a little confusing to begin with but as the play progresses the plot unravels with an unexpected twist and it becomes extremely engaging and even heart-breaking at times.
