Liv Hill, Siena Kelly, and Tanya Reynolds will be reprising their critically acclaimed roles as the three central heroines, with Hill (Alma Mater, The Doctor, Top Girls) returning as Jane, Kelly (Black Mirror, A Christmas Carol, On the Town) as Anna, and Reynolds (Sex Education, A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Mirror) as Mariella. Further casting will be announced in due course.

Written by Ava Pickett and directed by Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica), 1536 was hailed as one of the best theatre shows of 2025 by The Guardian, The I Paper, Time Out, The Stage, and WhatsOnStage. It has been praised as “effortlessly funny, bold and ballsy” (The Guardian) and “razor-sharp, darkly comic and blisteringly relevant” (The Independent) and won Pickett the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the award for Best Writer at the 2025 Stage Debut Awards.

1536's West End transfer has been highly anticipated. LuckyChap, the production company founded by Margot Robbie, approached Sonia Friedman Productions after reading Pickett's script. Of the upcoming transfer, they said, "The show is fearless, witty and emotionally resonant, and it gives voice to women whose stories still feel timely today. Bringing 1536 to the West End is an incredibly exciting next chapter, and we’re honoured to help champion this phenomenal piece of art.

The play is set in Tudor England, where King Henry VIII has just ordered the execution of Anne Boleyn, sending shockwaves throughout the country. In rural Essex, three women gather in their childhood meeting place to discuss the shocking events in London. Soon the women - midwife Mariella, good girl Jane, and sexually liberal Anna - recognise the parallels between their ordinary rural lives and the royal drama that's consuming the country, forcing them to make choices that inevitably lead to violence.

This thrilling historical drama with a modern edge will run from 2nd May to 1st August 2026 at the Ambassadors Theatre.
