A brand-new musical based on the global movie phenomenon makes its World Premiere at the Bristol Hippodrome in March. With the limited season already completely sold-out and news that Disney’s Hercules will be closing in the Autumn, does that mean a West End debut for The Greatest Showman The Musical is on the cards at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane before the end of the year?

What is The Greatest Showman about?
For those who have been living under a rock, The Greatest Showman is a musical film inspired by the life of 19th-century showman P.T. Barnum. Released in 2017, the film boasts an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman in the leading role, alongside Zac Efron and Zendaya.
The story charts Barnum’s rise from humble beginnings as the son of a tailor to the creator of the well-renowned Barnum & Bailey circus. Along the way, he showcases so-called “freak” performers, including a bearded lady, while facing backlash from outraged locals and grappling with the strain that ambition and fame place on his marriage.
As a film, The Greatest Showman received mixed reviews from critics but was nominated for several awards, including Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards. There was always an interest in seeing it adapted for the stage with Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular currently playing at the Empress Museum since September 2024. Although it features the songs and is based on the popular movie, it’s not an “official” stage adaptation but a great alternative for fans for now!
Who brought The Greatest Showman Musical to the stage?
News of the stage musical adaptation of The Greatest Showman was released in March 2025, with Bristol Hippodrome announced as the venue for the world premiere. The sell-out run will play from 15 March to 10 May 2026.
The musical features Music & Lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, both known for their work on the film, but also Dear Evan Hansen and La La Land. The Book is by Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Series) and is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls).
Pasek and Paul won a Golden Globe for “This Is Me” from the 2017 film and have written additional songs for the stage adaptation. The Greatest Showman Musical will feature beloved hits such as “The Greatest Show”, “A Million Dreams” and “Come Alive”.

Who is starring in The Greatest Showman musical?
Oliver Tompsett (&Juliet, Broadway and Shaftesbury Theatre) and Samantha Barks (Frozen, Theatre Royal Drury Lane) lead the production as P.T. and Charity Barnum.
They are joined by Lorna Courtney (&Juliet, Stephen Sondheim Theatre and Toronto) as Anne Wheeler, Ben Joyce (Shucked, Regent's Park Open Air Theatre) as Phillip Carlyle, Vajèn van den Bosch (Frozen, Netherlands) as Jenny Lind and Malinda Parris (Hercules, Theatre Royal Drury Lane) as Lettie Lutz.
When is The Greatest Showman coming to the West End?
Whilst there is no official announcement that The Greatest Showman will be transferring to the West End once its debut at the Bristol Hippodrome is through, there is real potential for it to do so.
Rumours have speculated that it will be heading to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which has been home to previous Disney stage adaptations like Frozen and currently Hercules. We think that this would be the perfect place for it to make its debut in London, especially with another Disney delight, The Lion King, just down the road too!
If the production does make its way to the bright lights of theatreland, whether that is at the tail end of the year or beginning of 2027 - you can bet we will be the first to let you know!
