With a book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, RENT follows a group of impoverished young bohemians living in Manhattan's East Village, navigating love and loss, trying to make it as artists while grappling with the realities of poverty, and living with the invisible, inevitable threat of HIV/AIDS.
It is loosely based on Puccini's classic opera, La Boheme, and features unforgettable songs such as 'Rent', 'La Vie Boheme', 'Take Me or Leave Me', and 'Seasons of Love'. With four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama under its belt, RENT ran on Broadway for 12 years from 1996. It had its West End premiere in 1998 at the Shaftesbury Theatre, where it ran for 18 months.
Sonia Friedman Productions and Chris Harper Productions shared a teaser on social media revealing that the beloved musical will be making a return to the West End in autumn 2026, which will mark its 30th anniversary. More details, including dates and venue, are expected to be announced soon.
