Cry Harry for England and St George! See Henry V from November 2013
The splendid Noel Coward theatre in London’s West End is the venue for the second play in the theatre’s Michael Grandage season. A cracking version of Henry V starring Hollywood and TV actor Jude Law, it’s a Shakespeare classic kicking off in November 2013, brought to dramatic life by the show’s respected director and star-studded cast.
Henry V – The story
Can you stand the suspense? This prime piece of Shakespearean drama hits the stage at the prestigious Noël Coward Theatre in November 2013, directed by Michael Grandage and starring Jude Law.
Set in early fifteenth century England, the play opens in a tense political landscape. Henry IV is dead and young Henry V has just taken the throne. But civil war has left the country in a mess and Henry’s wild past has caught up with him. The climax of the tale comes at the famous Battle of Agincourt, at which the English are outnumbered five to one by their French enemies. Against all the odds the English win the battle and peace negotiations take place, supported by Henry’s betrothal to Catherine, the French king’s daughter. Will the marriage unite the two kingdoms?
The play was written around 1599 but as with all the Bard’s classics, the story is as fresh as the day it was written and as relevant as ever. Add Jude Law to the mix and you have something really special, as he takes the stage in the footsteps of previous highly respected twentieth century Henry Vs including Laurence Olivier, Ivor Novello, Richard Burton and Kenneth Branagh.
Serious drama for history lovers
The world is a stage, and this play is set to be a monster hit for 2013. This is serious drama for Shakespeare fans and an excellent introduction to his work for newcomers to the Bard’s plays. Colourful, action packed and violent, it’s a classic with a celebrity twist.
