It’s the 1960s and seven teachers are working at the Cambridge school for teaching English to foreigners. As their relationships intertwine, the play reveals the loneliness they all feel for one reason or another, in a completely charming exploration of the typical British ‘stiff upper lip’.
Starring: Rowan Atkinson
Tickets from £32.00
It’s the school of life… welcome to Quartermain’s Terms
Rowan Atkinson takes the stage to play St John Quartermaine, a treat for comedy lovers and an inspired piece of theatrical casting.
Quartermain’s Terms - The story
Quartermaine's Terms covers two years in the staffroom, in a 1960s school where foreigners are taught English. The play explores the complex relationships between seven teachers, focusing on the kind hearted bachelor St John Quartermaine, a man who is always willing to listen to other people’s teaching issues but is a dreadful teacher in his own right!
The appointment of a new Principal brings Quartermain's future into doubt in this sensitive look at loneliness and British people’s inability to admit to it, never mind deal with it.
In one way or another all the play’s characters experience loneliness, the main theme running through the piece like a thread. Mark’s marriage is in terminal jeopardy. Northerner Derek finds Cambridge cold and unwelcoming. Eddie is forced to deal with bereavement. Anita’s husband is terminally unfaithful, poor Henry’s family is about as dysfunctional as it gets and Melanie is trapped too, caring for an infirm and elderly mother whom she dislikes intensely.
A very British play
This is a wonderfully British play and if you’re like most of us you’ll recognise yourself here and there, which adds extra poignancy. If you’ve ever muddled through without complaining or done your best to avoid taking action if at all possible, it’ll resonate with you! The script is hilariously British too, full of euphemisms as people duck issues, give out confusing signals and voice cries for help so subtly they’re completely ignored.

Very Good Play
Great acting and good story line, unfortunately not as humorous as hoped for. Very enjoyable just the same.

I liked the play very much; I am not a theatre expert and certainly not a crtic but the play engaged me and then led me through its content expertly. Do go and see it, ignore some of the negative reviews and allow the play to lead you to its conclusion. Great, theatre!
Chris
