Dr. Strangelove in London

Starring:

Steve Coogan

Movie maker Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove is set to premiere in the West End, a world-class version of what’s often called one of the greatest comedic movies of all time. This is the stage version of Kubrick's 1964 classic, which was nominated for four Academy Awards and seven BAFTAs at the time. It’s the first time his work has been produced on stage and it’s all thanks to a collaboration between the BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Armando Iannucci and Olivier winner Sean Foley.

Welcome to a terrifying world where a nuclear attack is about to take place, a glorious satire that’s as horrifying as it is hilarious. As Katharina Kubrick, Kubrick's daughter, said: "The subject matter of this film is particularly relevant again in our prevailing political climate. People often laugh when they would rather cry, and this is exactly how the film, and now the play, handles the possibility of the ultimate destruction of life on earth; certainly, an important topic amongst many, to concentrate the mind."

Sean Foley’s statement is equally strong: "Stanley Kubrick’s ’nightmare comedy’ is a perennially relevant satire on world politics and how powerful men can be stupid enough to let us all die if it means they get to brag about it."

Explosively funny, this show reveals what happens when a handful of men seem hell-bent on mutually assured destruction. The cast, dates, venue and full creative team will be revealed nearer the time.

What's the plot of Dr Strangelove?

Dr Strangelove reveals the story of an unhinged US Air Force general who launches a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. The 1964 movie was directed, co-written, and produced by Stanley Kubrick himself and starred the wonderful Peter Sellers in three roles, including Strangelove. The plot follows the President of the US, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a Royal Air Force exchange officer as they try to stop the crew of the B-52 plane on the way to the USSR from starting a war to end all wars.

The film satirised the Cold War, a time when there were real fears of nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the USA. The plot was loosely based on the 1958 thriller Red Alert by Peter George, who co-wrote the screenplay along with Kubrick and Terry Southern.

The film was ranked 26th in the 1998 American Film Institute list of best American movies. The year 2000 saw it at number three in the funniest American films list. It’s preserved in the United States Library of Congress top 25 films as ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’. Four Academy Award nominations included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Peter Sellers.

The 7 BAFTA Film Awards the movie attracted resulted in wins for Best Film From Any Source, Best British Film, and Best Art Direction (Black and White). All this hails well for the stage production, which will be one of the darkest comedies the West End has seen for a while.
