Guys and Dolls - Phoenix Theatre in London

Starring:

Rebel Wilson

What's all the fuss about? This lively, vibrant musical is based on a handful of particularly colourful stories by the American journalist Damon Runyon, a writer famous for his vivid tales about the gamblers, hustlers and nightclub singers of 1920s and 1930s New York. The stories, called The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, Pick the Winner and Blood Pressure, mirrored an outrageous, scandalous era whose echoes still inspire us today, glamorous and wonderfully dodgy.

This brand new version is produced for the West End by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons. The original music and lyrics are, of course, crafted by the legendary Frank Loesser and you can even read the book, written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.

The première of the show rocked Broadway back in 1950, running for an extraordinary 1200 performances and winning a Tony Award for Best Musical. And it has enjoyed a constant run of revivals, each as popular as the last. It even inspired a 1955 movie starring Hollywood superstars Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.

The musical was so popular it won the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Drama but at the time the unfortunate Abe Burrows, co-writer of the book, was being hounded for 'un-American' activities. The USA was mired deep in irrational political paranoia, and the award trustees vetoed the decision. That year, the Pulitzer prize for drama wasn't awarded to anyone. But while US politics changed and the paranoia eventually died down, Guys and Dolls lived on... and on.

When the movie giant 20th Century Fox acquired the film rights to the musical in early 2013, there was a flurry of excitement. It looks like there might eventually be another movie version in the pipeline...

Guys and Dolls – The story

You're in for a treat of a tale about gangsters, gamblers and other undesirable yet fascinating characters, all denizens of New York's colourful underworld.

The marvellous Sophie Thompson plays Miss Adelaide, well known for her roles in The Physicists, Clybourne Park, Shakespeare's Measure for Measure at the Globe and more. And the talented Jamie Parker plays Sky Masterson, following on from a run of critically acclaimed productions including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, As You Like It at the Globe, Racing Demon and The History Boys.

great night out

Of course we were lucky enough to catch Rebel Wilson in one of her last performances but I have every expectation the show will continue to be a success with another Miss Adelaide. The whole cast worked well together to provide an evening of fun with a good mix of comedy, music, and dance.

Imaginative Reworking

Meets all the requirements of a classic musical, but with some very twenty-first-century mannerisms and comic moments. Catch it on tour.

As far as I was concerned it was a disaster. Tried to book a cab but cabs were not going to London. So took a train to Victoria. No cabs going into anywhere. A lot of walking on the station. my feet and legs very painful. It was cyclists blocking the road! Came home. In all this non adventure cost me over a hundred pounds. I am not a happy fellow. It would have cost you virtually nothing to send email with booking to advise of this. R A VESOTZKY r.vesotzky@talktalk.net

With A Rebel Yell..More More More

I have seen Guys and Dolls so many times I thought it held no surprises. Wrong. All of the cast are outstanding without exception & Rebel's unique Adelaide, whilst not perfect in musicality, gave the character a warmth , humour and humanity I've not seen in any other performances of that role. Arrive on time as the show starts bang on 7.30. Drinks etc usual exorbitant prices (£9 for an Ice Cream), I took my 14 year old daughter along with me. She loved it!! And teenagers now a days.. Tougher than the West End Critics.

Runyonland as you've never quite seen it before

I've known and loved 'Guys & Dolls' over perhaps 40 years, including playing rehearsal piano / pit keyboard for a good-amateur production. Once I even saw it done by a student co. at the [open-air'] Minack in Cornwall, with no pit, fly-tower etc. ... a rising full moon over the calm Channel brought a unique, if wonderfully 'wrong', atmosphere to their sewer-crapgame scene. Anyway, the 2016 incarnation at the Phoenix offers a faithful but inventive & evocative telling of the story, with lively lighting, costumes, set and choreography supporting a splendidly energetic cast. All the leads were confident and subtle without ever turning blasé nor overdoing it. Miss Adelaide could almost have stolen the show but in fact the ensemble was superb, and I liked the ways in which the MD had developed the score that bit further at various points. The cooky perspective on the early & subsequent set dollies, and the almost-larger-than-life costumes (not least those wonderful check fabrics), brought a jaunty air to the whole production which was carried across all departments (the lighting-plot, and its interaction with the rear panels, was great fun and fully in keeping, without, again, ever quite stealing the show). I attended with a female teenage European homestay language student that didn't have any particular background in Broadwayana, and she too absolutely loved it. Bravo all round!

Rebel made the show

I loved the show from the second half, without Rebel it would have been just OK shes an amazing comedien. The first half was missing something that I cant put my finger on .I loved all the songs and the dancers were outstanding.

Rebel Wilson... Amazing!!!

Rebel Wilson was just hilarious. Show wouldn't have been the same without her. Not sure the story-line is the best of all theatre shows I've seen but Rebel made it worth the watch.

Meet the New Guys and Dolls

by Phil Willmott | Thursday, March 3 2016, 21:29

Guys and Dolls Who’d have thought that this season’s smash hit musical would be a show that’s nearly half a century old!

GUYS AND DOLLS which many people, including me, consider one of the greatest musicals ever written, has been constantly revived all over the world in major, community and school productions ever since its Broadway première in 1950.
