Alan Bowne died of AIDS in 1989, but his ground-breaking play BEIRUT had received its first outing 3 years earlier in the August of 1986, at the Bay Area Playwrights Festival on the outskirts of San Francisco.

Last year, the Royal Opera House took the bold step of commissioning a replacement for John Copley’s 1974 Bohème which had served as a mainstay of its repertoire for 41 years. Bolder still, was the decision to ask Richard Jones to direct the new production.

As part of LIFT 2018, the Irish dance theatre company CoisCéim in collaboration with ANU Productions have taken over Shoreditch Town Hall for an immersive dance/performance/art installation experience, but with little consideration for those who will endure it.


Second Look: RED at the Wyndhams Theatre

John Logan’s play RED is enjoying a successful revival with a limited run (until end July) at Wyndhams Theatre and would appeal to those of an artistic inclination, or anyone who simply enjoys erudite, aesthetic verbosity - however unrealistic and flowery the phrasing occasionally feels.

Review: CAFE SOCIETY SWING at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East

It would be very easy to like this piece. It would also be very easy to dislike it - and oddly enough, for exactly the same reasons.
We’re in Greenwich Village, New York at the tail end of 1938. Prohibition ended 5 years ago and various clubs (all offering alcohol and entertainment) have sprung up to cater to the seemingly limitless demand of white, wealthy, east coast Americans.
