A new West End revival of Jonathan Larson’s Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical, RENT, is rumoured to be coming to London this year.

About RENT

With a book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, RENT follows a group of impoverished young bohemians living in Manhattan's East Village, navigating love and loss, trying to make it as artists while grappling with the realities of poverty, and living with the invisible, inevitable threat of HIV/AIDS.

It is loosely based on Puccini's classic opera, La Boheme, and features unforgettable songs such as 'Rent', 'La Vie Boheme', 'Take Me or Leave Me', and 'Seasons of Love'. With four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama under its belt, RENT ran on Broadway for 12 years from 1996. It had its West End premiere in 1998 at the Shaftesbury Theatre, where it ran for 18 months.

RENT is one of the most beloved pieces of theatre of all time, notable for revitalising a love for musical theatre among young people and for its ground-breaking portrayal of people with HIV/AIDS.

Is RENT returning to the West End?

While there has been no official announcement so far, there have been speculations that RENT will be making its return to London's West End, possibly back to the Shaftesbury Theatre, sometime in the autumn of this year. Fans are naturally thrilled - RENT has had a huge impact on musical theatre and popular culture, with a powerful, enduring story and captivating soundtrack.
