Rebecca in London
How popular is this story? The answer is very popular indeed! There have been ten different productions of Rebecca so far, each in a different language, and now it's the UK's turn.
This is the English language premiere of the critically acclaimed musical Rebecca, fresh from the Austrian musical producer Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, created by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, and translated by Christopher Hampton.
Rebecca theatre tickets whisk you to a sinister new world. So far more than two million people have seen and loved the show worldwide. Make your way to the capital's Charing Cross Theatre and lose yourself in a classic thriller inspired by Daphne Du Maurier's 1938 novel of the same name. The 1940 American romantic psychological thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock was brilliant, and this exciting new musical is predicted to be just as good.
Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay are highly successful German language musical theatre composers. The musical enjoyed its world premiere at the VBW-theatre Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria, back in early autumn 2006, where it sold out for three seasons.
The orchestra of 18 people is directed by Alejandro Bonatto, who brought the house down with a legendary production of Donizetti's Rita. The translator, Christopher Hampton, is a two-time Tony Award winner for Best Score and Best Book for Sunset Boulevard. He also won Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on Dangerous Liaisons and The Father.
What's the plot of Rebecca?
Rebecca weaves 22 original songs into a classic story to recreate a gripping thriller full of intrigue.
The plot is much the same as the novel. Rich Maxim De Winter brings his shy, naive new wife home to his Cornish estate, Manderley. The scary and manipulative housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, hates her employer's new wife. She manages to persuade her she's not worthy of De Winter or his lovely home. She's nothing compared to the first Mrs. De Winter, who was glamorous and mysterious. But Rebecca drowned in an accident, and the results were tragic.
The full cast and creatives will be announced nearer the time.
Who is Rebecca for?
This is an adult story suitable for people old enough to understand a frightening story and appreciate its subtleties.

Great show with wonderful score complementing a great story. Clever how the actors utilise the small theatre by integrating the auditorium.

Loved the show would highly recommend it. The theatre was small but very cosy, the cast used the whole of the theatre as well as the stage. The music was very dramatic and the story was portrayed with passion and professionalism.

The theatre is small but very comfortable and we had good seats so we could see and hear all the action. The story was brilliant and it kept you on your seats as the end was surprising and you get involved with the players. The show is suitable for all ages and everyone seamed to enjoy the performance

Plan to arrive early, as the Charing Cross Theatre can be a bit difficult to find if you don't already know where to look. It's worth the search. "Rebecca" delivers in every way. The costumes, music, acting, and lighting deftly capture the vibe and drama of the period. I felt as if I was in the story, peering at the blue waves of the Mediterranean, smelling the musk of a sad mansion, terrified searching for shipwreck victims ... and those aren't even the best parts. The first act tees you up, and then the second act blows you away with plot twists you can't see coming. Fantastic show.

My vocabulary is useless to describe my experience. If I had to review it in four words, I would say: You must see it! Especially if you have read the book or watched the movie. I came home voiceless because of shouting Bravo too loudly. B R A V O!!!

Review: REBECCA at Charing Cross Theatre
by Stuart King | Thursday, September 21 2023, 07:37
Sitting in the stalls of the Charing Cross theatre last evening, I swear there was a discernible creaking of timber. Perhaps not the beams of Manderley about to fall into a smouldering ruin, but more likely Daphne du Maurier shifting restlessly in her coffin, politely inquiring who had had the temerity to stage such a well-meaning yet lacklustre musical version of her classic Rebecca.
