The Woman in Black in London

The Woman in Black, a super-spooky gothic horror story

The Woman in Black is based on the 1983 book by Susan Hill. Stephen Mallatrat, who adapted the book for the stage, read the book on a beach in Greece, in the bright, unthreatening sunshine, but still found it an uncomfortable and disturbing experience. A classic in the making with a 1989 film version behind it as well as the 2012 movie, it’s guaranteed to give you a thrill you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry… so much so that some audience members find themselves leaving the lights on a home for weeks afterwards!

The Woman in Black – The story

The play kicks off with a funeral, which sets the tone for the rest of the play. Your worst fears will become reality as the story proceeds, telling the tale of junior solicitor Arthur Kipps and his experiences in spooky Eel Marsh House, where he spots a mysterious woman wearing black. He’s certain he really has seen her. But nobody else will admit she is there, and they won’t tell him who she is. As the story unwinds and Arthur sorts out his deceased client’s affairs, spooky incidents occur.

If you’ve ever sat around in the dark telling ghost stories, you’ll be familiar with the feeling of dread that watching The Woman in Black brings. But it’s far from being an ordinary, everyday horror story. This play is much more subtle and your fears are all in your mind… which somehow makes it worse. There’s no gore to speak of. Just a growing sense of tension and horror as you’re drawn in to the strange world of Eel Marsh House and the mystery inexorably unravels.

Tense and exciting, The Woman in Black is in its third decade on the West End and still thrills audiences from all over the world. Everyone enjoys a good scare and this production delivers time after time. It’s eerie. It’s dark. And it’s proving to be a massive on-going hit, with more than seven million of us enjoying the thrills it delivers since its first showing. Directed by Robin Herford with lighting by Kevin Sleep and produced by PW Productions, it’s an all-time theatre classic in the making.

It felt very slow during the first half. It was sometimes difficult to hear all the dialogue as I was in the upper circle. I felt that we were too far away to hear fully and could only see the tops of heads of the two characters for some of the show.

Spine chilling, an absolute must see!

The Woman in Black was incredible, such a chilling ghost story. Everything was just amazing, I was particularly impressed by the set, the use of stage, the sound effects, the acting and the story telling. We sat in the stalls which just added to the experience even more as I absolutely loved the way the actors used the aisle as well as the stage space. Just an amazing play, I would highly recommend booking your tickets now, it’s definitely one you don’t want to miss!

My niece wanted to see a play as opposed to the usual musical we see. I gave her 2 choices this or the Mousetrap she chose the Woman in Black. After reading about it she was a little concerned that it was billed as a horror…..but it was dark, empathetic and truly WONDERFUL. A fabulous show!

Fantastic acting

Show was brilliant but we had a couple who wouldn’t stop talking during the first half in front of us. They didn’t come back after the interval ?but then a couple from further along the row moved in front of us and were also moving about and talking - what is it with couples?? There should have been an usher in the theatre to speak to them.

Fabulous show

I was so glad that the play followed the original story. The actors did an incredible job bringing the show to life. I enjoyed all the jump scares and the actress portraying the woman in black was truly terrifying. I think I was most impressed with the use of the stage space—the way it was set up was eerie (with the curtain shrouding the staircase and the nursery), and the actors used the space masterfully. Really well done!

Well acted....great story telling....but missed a trick

The acting was fantastic and the story telling was superb. We live in a generation of high tech and special effects and I like the fact you had to use your imagination to create the scenes in your mind as the sets where very basic. In that respects, it is pretty much like reading the book, your mind fills in the gaps , so when you go along dont expect anything like the film. I had read lots of reviews of people being so scared that they had to walk out, so I was expecting alot.I did jump and scream along with the school children a few times (do expect lots of screaming teenagers if you go)...but I do think that it could of been scarier. Maybe the woman in black sitting next to an audience member of something? It did have its moments...but by far the acting held the atmosphere together.

The acting was good, but I’m incredibly disappointed in what I paid for. The story line was below average, and I just don’t understand all the reviews saying it was scary, terrifying, gripping, intense, etc. There wasn’t much to it at all. An hour was spent focusing on the fact that the man wanted to tell his story of events that happened. If I’d never been to the theatre before this would’ve put me off going again. Not to mention that the seats were so uncomfortable and you have more leg room on a plane. Also £5 for a small tub of pic n mix and £3.50 for a bottle of coke.. wow.

Disappointing

The actors did their best to keep the evening from sinking without trace, unfortunately the first ten minutes were inaudible. The pace of light changes were sometimes interminable and lost any tension the actors may have managed to produce, and the final straw was when the secret door was flung open it revealed for pretty much everyone on the left of the auditorium, the lighting strip and the brick wall behind.

Sadly I was massively disappointed with my visit to the fortune theatre and the show woman in black 3 actors with little more than 5 props and a fog machine - I felt the price I paid for the ticket was a huge rip off for what I was given ! Shame really it could be a good show if done right ! Sadly this isn't - the theatre itself is in very poor condition and you don't feel like you've been somewhere special - more like a amatuer dramatic performance ! Would not recommend to anyone
