Privates On Parade in London
Starring:
Simon Russell Beale
It’s farcical, it’s funny, it’s Privates On Parade
Privates on Parade is a play with songs in two acts, a superb farce written way back in 1977 by the English playwright Peter Nichols, who penned the book and lyrics, with music by Denis King. You’ll love the story of cross-dressing Captain Dennis, whose superb performances of Marlene Dietrich, Vera Lynn and Carmen Miranda form the backbone of this crazy award-winning comedy set against the horrifically un-funny backdrop of the cruel and brutal Malaysian campaign, which took place at the end of World War Two.
Directed by Michael Grandage, with fabulous set and costume design by Christopher Oram, atmospheric lighting design by Paule Constable and cracking choreography by Ben Wright, it’s part of the much heralded Michael Grandage Company season at the magnificent Noel Coward Theatre.
Privates On Parade - The story
Private Steven Flowers gets posted to the Song and Dance Unit in South East Asia, where he serves with the wonderfully flamboyant Captain Terri Dennis. It doesn’t take long for him to discover that it takes much more than a mere uniform to become a man…
Inspired by the author’s experiences
The play reveals the details of everyday life in the fictional Song and Dance Unit South East Asia, a mostly-gay military concert party stationed in Singapore and Malaysia in the late 1940s. The drama is inspired by the writer’s own wartime experiences, when he served with the Combined Services Entertainment, a real-life post war successor to the infamous British Entertainments National Service Association.

Don't WatchAbsolutely disgusting, nothing but foul language nudity.Actors (presumably) portraying homosexual men behaving in a lewd and insulting manner. This show should be banned under public decency as it is nothing but an outlet for a sick playwright's fantasies. I had to stay until the interval before I left as I am disabled and required assistance.

After the big build up - what did I think?I was slightly underwhelmed - this probably works better for older people who know the show. It has dated references to Carmen Miranda, Flanagan and Allen which don't resound with the younger audience members. As a piece of history it was shocking at the way racism and homophobia was regarded...but what is it trying to say today when we hope opinions are different.

Fabulous!Simon Russell Beale steals the show, of course, but the whole cast and live band is trully fabulous. No "double entendre" is left unturned, and the production is energetic, fun and wildly funny.

Bright, Bawdy: Brilliant! An amazing theatrical event, this show is just the latest in Michael Grandage's fabulous contribution to British theatre. We laughed uproariously from the first minute, and were crying by the poignant ending. DO NOT go to see this if you are easily offended by nudity or swearing - for the rest of you, Grandage's admirable policy of making cheap theatre tickets available to ordinary / young people will mean that anyone can see this piece of quality theatre.
