About Back To The Future

A “Feelgood triumph” (Telegraph), Back To The Future has been a cult classic since the blockbuster film was released in 1985. Now a pop culture phenomenon, the musical adaptation began its life at the Manchester Opera House in 2020. A year later, it flew into the Adelphi Theatre where it has been lighting up the West End ever since. Known for its captivating special effects, catchy tunes and for enabling the beloved 80s movie to life - it’s no surprise that it's gone on to snap up award wins, including Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards.

Back To The Future - The Story

Haven’t seen Back to the Future yet? It tells the story of Marty McFly, a teenager who is accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-travelling DeLorean car made by his crazy inventor friend Dr Emmett Brown. But when he goes back in time, the course of history changes and he ends up having to make his own parents fall in love otherwise he’ll cease to exist.

Back To The Future Cast & Creatives

So who stars in this new production? You've got Ben Joyce playing Marty McFly, best known for playing Frankie Valli in West End Musical Jersey Boys. Cory English plays Doctor Emmett Brown, Oliver Nicholas is George McFly and Sophie Naglik is Jennifer Parker. The rest of the cast includes Sarah Goggin as Lorraine Baines, Jay Perry as Goldie Wilson, Jordan Pearson as Biff Tannen, Lee Ormsby as Strickland, Rhodri Watkins as Dave McFly, and Patricia Wilkins as Linda McFly. Direction comes from the Tony-winning director John Rando, of Urinetown and On The Town fame, and the design team includes sets and costumes by Tim Hatley, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound from Gareth Owen and video from Finn Ross. The choreography comes from Chris Bailey, and the illusions from Paul Kieve.

Whether you are a fan of the cult classic film or want to enjoy a feel-good musical, Back To The Future has everything you need and more. The special effects alone will make you want to do your own time travelling…only to book another ticket immediately to see this show!

Amazing show even though I was not familiar with (most of) the music and songs before we attended the show. Most of the actors were great. Singers good with a few exceptions. Good story flow. Fantastic set. The time travels with the Delorean were amzingly visualized. Lighting and sound effects very good, too. Occasionally too lound. Perhaps give a notice up frount about the sound level?

You don’t need roads!

A treat for husband’s 67th birthday, a fan of the original film when it was first released. Our adult son came too, having been introduced to the film as a teenager. The musical certainly delivered with the DeLorean spectacle. We were trying to figure how the elevation above the audience was achieved! Likewise the clever effect of Doc at the clock in the storm was impressive. The whole cast were full of energy and maintained that throughout. Shoutout to the dancers who had so many costume and character changes. Doc played up to the audience hilariously. The second half was the best. Some of the musical numbers in the first half were padded out too much (almost as much as Lorraine’s bra!). Would have preferred more dialogue between Marty and Doc. Mr McFly’s peeping Tom song was cringy ( no reflection on the actor, who gave it his all during all his scenes. Overall, a great celebration of Back to the Future, particularly for original fans of the film, making it feel fresh and fantastical once once.

A Thrilling Trip Back in Time on the West End

I recently saw Back to the Future: The Musical at the Adelphi Theatre in London, and it was a fantastic experience. The show perfectly captures the spirit of the original film, with impressive special effects especially the DeLorean scenes and a talented, energetic cast. The performances are strong, the humor works well, and the mix of new songs and classic hits keeps the audience fully engaged. Overall, it’s an exciting, nostalgic, and highly entertaining production that’s definitely worth seeing in the West End.

Very disappointed.

I waited a long time to see this show. Love the films so this was a no brainier, however i felt like walking out during the interval but was persuaded to stay by those i was with. Follows the general storyline with lines from the film, but then there’s completely random nonsense like Marty whipping out a lightsaber. A lot of scenes that were added to the stage adaptation were just confusing and nonsensical. Also probably 90% of the songs were ‘crowbarred’ in and had no relevance to the story, it’s like they wrote a copy of the film for stage then decided to make it a musical and hastily shoehorned a load of songs in random places without really caring if it fits the current part of the story. I see 6/7 shows a year and this has to be up there with the worst i’ve seen in years. I was praying for it to end about 10 mins into the second half. At £105 per ticket i feel well and truly ripped off. The actors playing Doc and Marty seems to have forgotten their lines on several occasions and were waiting to be fed them- long awkward pauses between lines made me cringe. And also another detail was the lack of attention to detail was evident- as Marty is well known for wearing Nike training shoes in the film but the actor on stage wasn’t. If you can’t even be bothered to get iconic details correct, might as well give up. I’m surprised they had a DeLorean as the car and didn’t just substitute it with a Ford Sierra hoping no one would notice! The script when it diverted from the film was poor too- , with several people around me groaning at the poor attempt at humour. Honestly- don’t bother- there are so many more much better films to spend your money on.

The performances are lively and engaging, capturing the charm and excitement of Marty and Doc’s time-travel adventure. The standout feature is the incredible staging—especially the DeLorean scenes—which create real theatrical magic and keep the audience fully immersed. With its mix of nostalgia, heart, and fun, the show is an entertaining experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. Verdict: A fast-paced, feel-good production that delivers excitement, laughs, and impressive stage spectacle.

Great acting especially from the actor who played Doc Brown, but the real gem was the incredible stage production, super super creative and effective with the lights and how they used DeLorean on stage.
