Gwenda’s Garage in London
It's Sheffield in the 1980s, smack-dab in the middle of the Thatcher era. In a small industrial unit, three queer female mechanics set up their own garage, named after pioneering racecar driver Gwenda Stewart. But Gwenda's Garage is about more than just cars: it's about everyday women coming together to fight sexism, homophobia, and Section 28, and soon it grows into a hub for women's education and activism. This exuberant story of feminism, friendship, and the power of collective action is inspired by real life women mechanics: Ros Wollen (aka Roz), Annette Williams, and Ros Wall, who defied the odds in a male-dominated field by establishing their own car repair workshop in a run-down part of Sheffield in the 1980s.
This new British musical by Nicky Hallett, with music by musician and composer Val Regan, first premiered at Sheffield Playhouse and is now making its way down to London. Meticulously researched, it uses interviews with members and customers of the real-life Gwenda's Garage, along with feminist campaigners, to honour the memory of this iconic story. It stars Nancy Brabin-Platt as Bev, Eva Scott as Carol, Sia Kiwa as Terry, Lucy Mackay as Dipstick, and Georgina Coram as Feona. Scrappy, unruly, and seeped in an infectious atmosphere characterised by sisterhood, love, and friendship, set to a blazing original soundtrack.
Book now to witness the hidden, untold stories of those who trained and empowered future generations of women across South Yorkshire.
