Lazarus in London

Do you remember the eccentrically brilliant 1976 movie The Man Who Fell to Earth, starring David Bowie? It's one of the most unusual and memorable films of the era and the story has aged like a fine wine, just as relevant today if not more so when you consider global warming. Now it's on stage, re-created as a musical.

Bowie collaborated with the Tony-winning playwright Enda Walsh to create the Off-Broadway production of Lazarus, and it's transferring to London's theatreland for late 2016 / early 2017.

Like the New York show, the London production is directed by Ivo van Hove. It features three new songs from the Blackstar album plus numerous Bowie classics, fresh arrangements of well-loved tunes like Changes, Absolute Beginners and The Man Who Sold The World.

The world première starred Michael C Hall and opened on 7th December 2015 at the New York Theatre Workshop, off-Broadway. Bowie attended the opening night, his final public appearance before his death, having co-written and scored the show in the months beforehand.

The show's eight week New York run says it all. It won a rave review from the respected New York Times, and those in the know are expecting an equally popular London season. Bowie's legacy is powerful and it's great to see his songs on stage, something he'd dreamed of since his teenage years. The great man had, apparently, always wanted to write musicals. And they would, no doubt, have been totally fabulous if he'd had the opportunity to write more.

This musical is much more than a poignant parting gift for fans. This is a show-stopper, a wonderfully quirky story that lives on, still fascinates and still provokes thought.

Lazarus – The story

Lazarus is about the alien Thomas Newton, famously played by Bowie himself in the 1976 movie. He arrives on earth with a mission, to find water to take to his home planet, where everything is drying up and his family are dying. But it all goes horribly wrong. Celebrated and feted, wealthy and comfortable but ultimately a prisoner, he's doomed to misery, knowing time is running out and his wife and children are at death's door. A helping hand in the shape of a girl promising escape proves to be a horrible mistake...

Lazarus comes with a book and lyrics by David Bowie and Enda Walsh. The lighting is by Jan Versweyveld and the costumes by An D’Huys. Video comes from Tal Yarden and sound is by Brian Ronan. The choreography comes from Annie-B Parson and the dramaturgy from Jan Peter Gerrits.
