My Gay Best Friend in London
Louise Jameson returns to the stage to play Rachel - a 50-something, would-be diva - in My Gay Best Friend, an award-winning play which she co-wrote with fellow performer Nigel Fairs. Rachel has locked herself in the ladies, furious because her gay best friend Gavin isn’t there to support her; he’s sitting in a walk-in wardrobe about to become a father with a lesbian couple and a turkey baster!
To anyone who grew up in the 70s, Jameson will always be the knifewielding, leather-clad Leela from Doctor Who. Others remember her as Rosa di Marco in Eastenders, Bergerac’s girlfriend Susan or the feisty Blanche in Tenko. But her impressive television track record has been more than matched with her theatrical career, which began with the RSC and has included plays by Steven Berkoff and Alan Ayckbourn, as well as performances at the National Theatre.
Veronica Roberts directs these two in a heady mixture of high camp and melancholy reflection, on those friendships and childhood dramas that haunt us all.
