Richard III in London
Enjoy a classic tale of burning ambition with Richard III
Richard III – The story
Richard, the Duke of Gloucester and a hideous hunchback, has a burning ambition. His older brother is on the throne while he is an outcast, bitter and angry, shut out of the royal Court. Eventually winning the lovely Lady Anne’s confidence, he decides to remove his rivals. But will he succeed in winning absolute power?
Richard III, a record-breaking sell out!
Richard was the last Yorkist king of England. His death during the famous Battle of Bosworth ended the Wars of the Roses but he is probably most famous for his suspected involvement in the tragic disappearance of his two young nephews, known today as the Princes in the Tower.
Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
Thus begins one of the most dramatic Shakespeare plays. The story unfolds as the influential widow of Edward, Prince of Wales and the son of King Henry VI, takes Richard’s side. The jealous, twisted Richard thinks he’s onto a winner and begins to remove his rivals one at a time. This show sold out and broke records at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and it’s still drawing huge audiences every night.
The story of the famously crippled and downright nasty Richard III has been played in all sorts of ways over the years. He was even portrayed as a Nazi on film. Director Jamie Lloyd has brought a fresh new face to this enduringly popular tale from the bard to end all bards. As you can imagine the stage sets are absolutely fantastic, with rich costumes and period decoration designed to send you back through the centuries, giving audiences a real flavour of the era’s splendour and dark drama.

More than one bravoFirst get there early. Enjoy the cast dressing on stage. Feel in the sixteen century round. Then forget every Richard III you have seen. Rylance takes us all to new places in Gloucester's mania. We expected this man to do so. But this is no one man show. Roger Lloyd Pack's Buckinghsam, Peter Hamilton Dyer's Catesby, Samuel Barnett's Elizabeth are no bystanders to Rylance's genius. They too deserved the standing ovation.

The show was excellent. It was only spoiled by the person sitting behind me who coughed loudly throughout the entire performance. Why can't people like that leave the auditorium instead of ruining the performance for everyone around them, as well as disturbing the performers?

Shakespeare alive and living in Shafts. Av.A demanding, grown up play in a revelationary production. RIII himself is one of the sights of London today, but great ensemble playing ensures that barely a line is wasted - vide apparatchik Catesby hurrying off his charge to execution so dinner's not delayed.
