She Loves Me in London

Meet Amalia and Georg, who work as clerks in Maraczek’s Parfumerie and aren’t exactly the best of friends. However, they have something in common. They both rapturously write to romantic pen pals. Despite the anonymity of their secret admirers, they live for the love letters that they exchange and the day they will finally meet. This wonderful love story has been the basis for the films The Shop around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail. The musical version – written by the authors of Fiddler on the Roof – has delighted audiences since its 1963 Broadway premier and features a sparkling score that includes the now-classic songs Ice Cream and A Trip to the Library.

The show will be directed by Matthew White who returns to the Chocolate Factory where he previously directed Candide, Sweet Charity, Little Shop of Horrors and The Last Five Years. Scarlett Strallen returns to the Menier to play Amalia where she previously appeared as Cunegonde in Candide. Her other theatre work includes A Chorus Line (Palladium), Singin' in the Rain (Palace Theatre) and Mary Poppins (West End & Broadway).

Just wonderful

This revival is wonderfully staged. It is in equal parts funny, charming and moving. All the cast are great. The intimacy of a smaller theatre works really well and it all looks and sounds great. It's a bit of a squeeze in the seats but all seats have a good view of the stage. I was in the back row but still saw and heard everything very well. If you like traditional "the boy and girl end up together after several near misses "type of musicals with clever lyrics and wonderful music then you should really enjoy this show. I have seen very many musicals over many years and enjoyed very few (if any) more than this.

Review: SHE LOVES ME at the Menier Chocolate Factory

She Loves Me As I got up from my seat at the interval the word I kept hearing around me as the audience filed out to the bar was "lovely" and that one word summation is a pretty good description of the Menier Chocolate Factory's Christmas Show.

It's a revival of a 1963 Broadway musical and the story of how two shop clerks who despise each other end up writing anonymous love letters to each other when one of them replies to the other's lonely heart ad in the paper.
