Review: 946 THE AMAZING STORY OF ADOLPHUS TIPS at the Globe
By Phil Willmott Monday, August 22 2016, 15:19
This show was my first visit to the venue under the new artistic directorship of Emma Rice. The atmosphere has certainly livened up a bit with a covers band playing blatantly amplified music and the use of stage lighting. Under previous regimes this move away from traditional Elizabethan theatre practices would have been unthinkable, the venue used to be lit with a flood lights giving the same general wash over stage and spectators throughout.

It’s been a long time coming but now finally everything’s in place and it’s been announced that Meatloaf’s most theatrical of albums, BAT OF OUT HELL, will be the basis of a new stage musical, to be staged by Obie Award-winning director Jay Scheib.
The music and lyrics were written by Jim Steinman and the songs on the best selling trilogy of albums performed by Meat Loaf have always had a story linking them together.

If you love the soaring melodies of WICKED you’ll really enjoy CHILDREN OF EDEN at the Union Theatre, by the same composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz.
For me it was a rare opportunity to re-discover some of the most popular audition songs I hear as a director in their original dramatic context. I say rare because there hasn’t been a professional production in the UK since the premiere bombed in the West End 25 years ago.
