The original Broadway production of Fun Home opened in April 2015. It was awarded 12 Tony nominations and won five, including Best Musical. It won the Best Musical 2014 Outer Critics Circle award, was winner of the Best Musical 2014 Obie award, and won a Best Musical 2014 award from the Off Broadway Alliance. The musical's cast album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2016.

Alison Bechdel’s smash hit graphic novel has been brought to splendid life in a ground-breaking production performed entirely in the round. That means the audience sits in a circle around the stage, which brings the action to sparkling and particularly dramatic life. You'll meet three different Alisons, each a different age and each revealing poignant memories about her dysfunctional family. The New York Times calls it, “Heart-gripping and cathartic, (it) occupies the place where we all grew up”. And it has been widely hailed the best Broadway musical in years.

Unlike so many musicals, this isn't based on a movie or fairytale. It's gritty and real, dealing beautifully with Alison's uneasy relationship with her gay dad, and her eventual coming out as a lesbian. It's both warm and generous, suffused with humanity. And the original story is perfectly complemented by lyrics and a book from Lisa Kron and show tunes by Jeanine Tesori.

Fun Home – The story

Alison's dad, Bruce, was a dominant character who spent more time decorating their home and searching for antiques than devoting attention to his kids. His relationship with Alison was complicated. While Alison was at college she finally came out as a lesbian. Not long after, Bruce committed suicide... or did he? She never stops wondering whether her revelation drove him to kill himself, especially since he was also gay. The life of Alison Bechdel is explored by weaving scenes and conversations together in a non-linear way that's remarkably powerful and affecting. Wonderful stuff.
