Let The Right One In in London

Let The Right One In – Violent, bloody and oddly sweet

If you love mystery and adore being spooked, you’ll revel in this fantastic story of two young misfits from Sweden and their hair-raising secret. It’s playing at the Apollo theatre, a fitting play to mark the venue’s splendid refurbishment and long-awaited reopening.

Who’s responsible for this massive hit in the making? The Tony and Olivier Award winner John Tiffany directs, famous for his involvement in Black Watch and Once. And the original 2004 book, by John Ajvide Lindqvist, has been adapted for the stage by the talented Jack Thorne following the smash hit Swedish film and the 2010 Hollywood re-make of the same name. It looks like this is a story with legs, not to be missed, perhaps even a brand new classic.

Unusual, atmospheric and genuinely scary, it’s perfect for grown-ups and the over 13s, as long as they’re not easily scared or particularly sensitive to gore!

Let The Right One In - The story

Twelve year old Oskar is bullied. He’s very lonely. His dad has left and he lives with his mum on an ordinary housing estate outside Stockholm. His life is horribly dull until Eli moves in next door, a troubled soul the same age as him who doesn’t go to school, never leaves the house in daylight and seems just as lonely as Oskar.

When a series of horrific murders takes place in their neighbourhood, the young misfits discover a profound connection, the kind of relationship that blossoms when you meet a kindred spirit. But when Oskar discovers the real truth about Eli, it tests his loyalty and love beyond all imagining.

Martin Quinn plays Oskar and Rebecca Benson plays Eli, the ancient vampire who transforms his lonely life into something beautiful, tender and special. You’ll also experience fabulous performances by the supporting cast, including the talented Graeme Dalling, Angus Miller, Cristian Ortega and Susan Vidler.

A classy National Theatre of Scotland production, this play is already causing a stir of excited anticipation in the West End. It looks like it’s time to get your skates on and buy tickets before they all go!

Story telling that captivates

What a well thought through production of this Swedish story. A gripping ride tinged with moments of sadness, horror and humour. Wonderful acting, effective use of lighting and sound. This was by far the best play we have seen!

Well worth the effort. Certainly a memorable show. A bit scary for young children. GO SEE IT !

Very slow. Story did not translate well to theatre. Poor ending scene.

Very well done

Having seen the film I already knew the gist of the storyline but it was very different and enjoyable to watch on stage. Well acted with atmospheric music and scenery. The gory bits were very cleverly done - many people around me recoiled at the amount of blood! Worth going for something a bit different.

Surprisingly Good Adaptation of a Complex Novel

I went to this show very familiar with the novel and two films on which it was based, and was pleased by how the playwright adapted a very complex story to the stage, with visual references to the Swedish and Hammer Studios film versions. The set did a magnificent job of conveying the darkness of Lundqvist's novel, and referencing the Hammer Studios film version as well. And the acting was overall good, but I was not pleased by how the director chose to represent the vampire Abby/Eli--the character's otherworldiness was conveyed through his/her leaping around and speaking in a loud monotone, which just made the vampire seem to be suffering from Asperberger's Syndrome. Also, there was an interpretive dance scene when Oscar imagines fighting the bullies. WTF? Such a bad theater cliche, that technique.Kudos though to the set designer, for creating a device that served as a jungle gym and later a swimming pool, and also to the person who did Conrad's makeup to represent his acid burns. Also excellent special effects with blood spatter, though the ending would have been more in line with this production if the pool filled with blood, referencing the ending of the Hammer Studios films Let Me In.

Excellent Show!

Didn't know what to expect as I am not a regular theatregoer but I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend to others but would advise that it is not suitable for a young audience due to a few swear words which I wasn't expecting. Apart from that, I have no negatives and could even watch it again!

Spine-Chilling

After seeing the two films based on the story, I had to go and see the play. Brilliant plot about a young boy who is always victimized by nearly everyone and befriends a very strange girl. Very dark indeed. Great acting by everyone. One thing that could have improved was the setting could have been better, rather that just the woods. However, I absolutely enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to anyone was loves going to the theatre.

A night at the theatre

I took my girlfriend to see this on a night out in London. It was compelling watching though not for the feint hearted. Clever use of not a lot of scenery, easy to follow story, some language that could offend. An excellent choice for our nights entertainment

Interesting set and I liked the way they changed the scenes; you needed a bit of imagination to go with it. Good story / plot; a few shocks and well acted. A great way to spend an evening - well worth a look...

Bridging the generation gap

I chose the show because it was suitable for an adult male friend of mine and my 13-year-old teenager (called Eli...). On this account, it delivered as they both enjoyed the play. I thought that the theatre was lovely, we had good seats, but despite the fact that it was warm outside, I was cold for the whole play, and had to wear my jacket on.

From the Palace to the grave.

Being an Emergency Medic on a day off and watching throats get cut, necks slashed, near drownings and Police investigations was rather excellent. I enjoyed the show immensely. The blood spatter in the snow, the deep colour of claret running down a young females face, all quite chilling and realistic. The leading lady came across as a bit slow and awkward, until you realise her terrifyingly dark secret. Top acting my dear, please stay away from my son. I wish I had the time to see more of this kind of show. Horrifyingly disturbing, but enthralling to the end. Well done to all, you really creeped me out. Delicious!!!
