Why you should see Matilda The Musical

  • The musical has been delivering joy to London audiences for over 12 years.
  • Matilda the Musical features music from the comedian, musician and writer Tim Minchin. Songs like "Naughty" and "Revolting Children" will stick in your head after you've seen the show.
  • This show comes with universal appeal, there's genuinely something for all ages to enjoy.

What is Matilda The Musical about?

In this enduringly popular and wonderfully dark 1988 children’s story, Roald Dahl unfurls the classic tale of Matilda, a gifted child with terrible parents. Matilda’s mother is fascinated by ballroom dancing and ignores her daughter in the pursuit of her obsession. Her father is convinced that the books Matilda loves so much will cause Verrucas to grow on her soul. And the headmistress of Matilda’s horrid school is determined imprison as many children as she can. When Matilda finds she is the lucky owner of a very special ability, will there be a happy ending?

Matilda The Musical – Fantastic entertainment from the Royal Shakespeare Company

The combination of Dahl’s brave little heroine, a script by the Bafta nominated writer Dennis Kelly and hilarious words and music by off-the-wall Australian comedian Tim Minchin make this an absolute treat of a show. Directed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed Ghost and The Lord of the Rings, Matilda The Musical is rich in stage magic.

The production is designed by Rob Howell and choreographed by Peter Darling. Hugh Vanstone created the show’s extraordinarily atmospheric lighting. Christopher Nightingale supervised and orchestrated the music and Simon Bake the sound. Best of all, the stage magic has been created by the same consultant illusionist who put together the effects for Ghost the Musical, Paul Kieve.

Join Matilda on her magical journey as she discovers the power of her imagination and learns to stand up against adversity.

Excitement, enjoyment !

Lovely portrayal of Dahl's famous Matilda. I felt touched, excited, sadness, reflective while watching the musical. However, I find the punch line music too loud and the lights pyrotechnics too bright. The switching of scenes albeit smooth was quick, too quick to enjoy the moment with the scene, understandable to keep to time. Maybe review to reduce some aspects of scenes. The change of scenes in itself are marvels, so I would slow that down a little bit. I didn't like it that Miss Trunchball was a man, may confuse children but of course this is the UK with pantomimes. I understand for the drama effect but we could have a woman like the librarian 'in size' prep up for the role.

A fantastic show

Matilda is such an amazing show with so many best bits. Personally I loved Mr and Mrs Wormwood - deliciously over-acted and very funny. The staging, lighting, acting, singing were all brilliant and the child actors were superb.

Out of this World

I was enthralled from start to finish by the talent and professionalism of all the children. It was so entertaining and my Grand-Daughter was mesmorised with all the singing and dancing routines. It was First Class and I could see it again and again and still be overwhelmed by it all. The stage effects were unbelivable and so effective. Please convey my comments to all concerned.

Absolutely blown away

I had high expectations going in to this show, between it being a much loved children's book and music from one if my favourites, Tim Minchin, I expected a lot. I was not disappointed and completely blown away. For a cast of young actors, the skill and professionalism shown was outstanding. The quality of production was phenomenal, the acting superb, everything was amazing. Highly recommend everyone to go see it.

First class and professional actors. But have no idea how they passed the show off as Matlida. It bore no resembleance to the film. Complete none.

A great show to appreciate high level professional actors. But not relevant to the film Matilda.

Would recommend this show to any and everyone it was amazing. The children were fantastic (as were the adults) but Bruce and of course Matilda stole the show for me. This was a christmas gift for my granddaughter (12) and it was the best presant she received. We took our own snacks and drinks but splashed out for a programme as a keepsake of the event. The staff were all lovely and very helpful and had upgraded our seats before we arrived for no apparent reason so that was a bonus. Really reasonable price for a different kind of pure entertainment. All Absolutely Fabulous

Great story and excellent cast

Loved the show overall - it’s a heartwarming story. A few jokes aimed at the kids in the audience and a few more adult themes hinted at. The volume of the speakers was just a bit too high and actually we struggled to make out the words in places as result of it all just being too loud. Could benefit from paring back rather than adding to it, in terms of the lighting flashes and stuff. The moving chalk etc was subtler and consequently actually much more enjoyable. Loved the comic Mrs Trunchbull and the very well acted Miss Honey had an angelic voice. Matilda herself was great, a very impressive young actress. Overall a great experience, much recommended !

Matilda The Musical Now in its eighth year in London’s West End, Matilda the Musical has brought in some new cast members to tell the story of Roald Dahl’s popular child genius and does so in a rather ingenious way. Adapted for the stage by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics from the Australian comedian Tim Minchin, this musical has been a massive success since it opened at the RSC in 2010.

Review: A new MATILDA takes the stage at the Cambridge Theatre

by Nicola Wright | Monday, June 5 2017, 22:10

Matilda The Musical - London When a little girl you have known since she was five is cast as Matilda you go along to one of her first performances with an open mind and ready to be entertained. I was not disappointed!

The new cast of children (one of four teams alternating performances) are superb and deserve the standing ovation they received. Emma Moore is one of four children cast as Matilda and her confidence and stage presence is extraordinary from one so young. Emma captivates the audience, just as Matilda enthrals the character of Mrs Phelps, the librarian, who she entertains with stories.

Fall in Love with Matilda

by Phil Willmott | Wednesday, May 17 2017, 20:08

Matilda The Musical - London Everybody loves the musical Matilda. When it opened at the Royal Shakespeare's home theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon even the most pompous critics were besotted calling it the greatest new musical of recent years. Actually it isn't, the musical numbers are fun but beyond the infectious kids song - When I Grow Up - there's nothing anyone will still be singing in ten years time but watching the show is a glorious experience and if you haven't seen it before you'll fall in love with it too. I paid a second visit the other night and fell for its charms all over again.

Roald Dahl When we think of writers who have multiple shows running in the West End at the same time we tend to think of Shakespeare, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Alan Aykbourn and Noel Coward but a much loved children's author is currently catching them up.

The books of Roald Dahl are enjoying a whole new lease of theatrical life thanks to the efforts of agent Mel Kenyon who looks after the deceased writers legacy.
