Oscar Winning Film, Stage and TV Star F Murray Abraham Comes to The West End
By Phil Willmott Monday, May 29 2017, 09:41
F Murray Abraham is heading to the West End and I can’t wait to see him perform live again.
He was virtually unknown to the wider public when he was cast as the lead in a Hollywood film of Peter Shaffer’s hit stage play Amadeus, which some of you may have seen revived recently at the National Theatre. With that title you’d be forgiven for thinking the big part would be composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and indeed the story does centre around the genius’s struggle to win respect, wealth and recognition during his life time.

Review: ANNIE GET YOUR GUN at The Union Theatre
By Phil Willmott Monday, May 29 2017, 07:44
If like me you're a fan of good, old fashioned musicals and you're theatre-going on a budget then you've a treat in store at the Union Theatre this month.
They're currently presenting Irving Berlin's classic show Annie Get Your Gun in a perfect pocket sized production with a great cast and peppy little band that does full justice to the gold plated score. It includes You Can't Get A Man With A Gun, Anything You Can Do, Doin' What Comes Naturally and of course There's no Business Like Show Business.

A West End production has been announced which combines some of the most exciting emerging theatre makers of recent years with two of TV’s favourite actors.
The play is called Labour of Love, and it’ll open at the Noel Coward Theatre in September.

Last chance to catch the Beautiful BEAUTIFUL
By Phil Willmott Friday, May 26 2017, 14:25
I always like to celebrate a show whose primary purpose is to give pleasure and Beautiful which is about to end its time at the Aldwych Theatre after a very respectable run of over two years, is just such a show.
You also learn a lot too. Although I’ve loved songs like So Far Away, Take Good Care of My Baby and Locomotion but I had no idea that the same songwriter was behind them all. That song writer was Carole King and the show takes the form of a gentle autobiography, dramatising scenes from King’s life interspersed with musical numbers she’s written.

Review THE COLOUR PURPLE: Great News for Stage Struck Kids and their Cash Strapped Parents
By Phil Willmott Tuesday, May 23 2017, 09:59
Last night, May 21st, saw an event at the Cadogan Hall conceived to encourage more kids from culturally diverse backgrounds to not only appreciate West End performances but to aspire to perform themselves.
It took the form of a scintillating concert performance of Broadway musical The Colour Purple featuring some of the best black performers in the U.K. spending their night off from major London and touring shows like Dreamgirls, The Bodyguard and Jesus Christ Superstar to sing with a choir of young performers and no doubt inspiring every one of them.
